So let me get this straight. You contend that it is more convenient to use a 1.5" screen with tiny speaker for turn by turn in a car than a 4-5.5" screen with louder speaker that is likely already using your cart speakers? I'll say again, you aren't being realistic. You may have a case for walking directions, although I would contend few people actually use turn by turn for walking.

That's not turn by turn directions. So we have to memorize new patterns for left and right turn? What about a "bank" turn? I have a garmin as well, and haptic feedback for laps and heat rate is not the same as turn left. Maybe it works great. Until I see reviews that confirm that, I'll chalk it up to another gimmick like sending my heartbeat.
What is the BIG deal? The aWatch is also a fitness tracker and has maps for biking and running so navagation is a 'freebie'. It doesn't add weight and you are not required to use it. Also it does't pee in your cereal. Let people who want it have it including other things you and I may consider useless or gimmicky.

No harm and no foul by having extra features.

It's more convenient not having the iPhone out when I can simply glance at my wrist, that's all.

I agree. I wish that had been more the focus, and less on extraneous features that feel tacked on.

The BIG deal, as you say, is wouldn't it be nice to have a truly great, best in class, fitness tracker and notifier for $100 less? As it is, we get notifications, fitness tracking that pales in comparison to those established in the market (read Gamin, Suunto, Polar, Timex), and junk features like heartbeat sending, photos, maps, a launcher, none of which will be better than the phone in the pocket.

The big deal is what could have been. I so wanted this to displace my fenix 2.

They went the fashion accessory route.
Let's face it; fitness accessories have very very niche appeal, too small for Apple.

Perhaps. Though at the prices they are aiming for, I would think the fitness market bigger, but fair point.

This is Apple's gen 1 and by gen 2 or 3 it WILL almost certainly be the best fitness/health tracker with lots of added features and sensors. However Apple has to take the entire world market into account and start with a little something for everyone. Features that you consider 'junk' or unnecessary (and me too) are extremely important in selling the aWatch to the youth (never worn a watch and need several reasons to get into the habit like HB with girl/boyfriend) and special features amid at the all too important Asian markets (like Emojis and drawing). Apple can't neglect these markets by making a watch with limited target audience. Also by hooking the youth who are 'bulletproof' with "junk" like HB and then getting them interested in health/fitness we will collectively benefit.

I'm a fitness nut and data junky so for now I will be running with my Garmin 620 on my right and my aWatch on my left. I'll be anxiously awaiting the gen 2 to see what fitness related improvements and enhancements (like added sensors) it makes while respecting the added features that won't interest me but will be of use to others and help sell more aWatches.
