Well, my 24" 2.8 arrived yesterday! Bought it from Amazon. Got the two day free shipping, but it arrived in one day. Total was $1744 but I get a $100 rebate. So, $1644 (but I won't see that $100 for awhile).

Also ordered a Lacie 1TB external Firewire drive for backup and the AppleCare from Amazon. The Applecare was $20 off the normal price. Ordered 2GB of extra RAM from Crucial which should arrive in the next couple days (cost $38 vs. $150 installed by Apple)

I haven't had a chance to get it out of the box yet (was feeling under the weather last night) but peeked inside and the 24" is HUGE. I didn't realize how big it was. We have a 20" here at work. The 24" seems to dwarf it.

Feeling better today, so I'm going to fire it up tonight. Can't wait. (Although I got the roll of the eyes from my wife when I carried in the box last night. She said "really?... you really needed something that big?)

You could ask her the same. :D

I'm looking at the same deal you are. If Best Buy won't match a price tonight, I'm pulling the trigger on the Amazon deal. Did the courier make you sign for the package? If so, I'll have to ship it to my Mom's.

ymark: Google macworld rumors, you'll find ALL sorts of stuff. I just read (appletell.com) that there has been light chatter about the new imac having touchscreen capabilities (it did mention it was a "highly unlikely" rumor) as well as Beatles on iTunes - you name it and it's probably been rumored or been a comment on a rumor. Sorry I don't have an exact source but just read some of the stuff that's being said...it really does make pulling the trigger to get a new iMac really difficult!!

greedy: Thanks for the detailed recommendation, My 1st gen MBP was a refurb...don't know why I didn't consider that w/the iMac. Is there a major difference between the 128 and 256 graphics cards? Just wondering?

you will notice the difference mainly in photoshop files. However, it also helps to have more memory devoted to graphics when you want to run video while running multiple programs. All in all, it seems like the difference in price is justified in the difference in the graphics card. Also if you decide to wait and get a 24" there is no 128 option.

More thoughts as I set everything up and install software.

- This thing is much faster than I thought... and I haven't even received my extra 2GB of RAM. It is faster than my MacPro at work... which is plenty fast enough for me.

- Having trouble installing Adobe CS3. I have it at work and am trying to install the same license here at home. Supposedly, I am allowed to do this, but somehow I can't activate it. I'm going to have to call Adobe.

- Love the keyboard although it is going to take some getting used to.

- I'm extremely happy that the monitor glare is a non issue. I was worried, since I am going to be processing photos. I had read about people complaining about the glare. I have an overhead light on and a TV on directly behind me and I'm having no problems (granted, when I get down to editing I will be making the room as dark as possible). The monitor is too bright though and I'm going to have to adjust that.

- One thing I do find a tad annoying is that with the back being black it is hard to locate the correct import for each device... considering that the back is in a shadow area. Not a big deal though.

Overall, I'm ecstatic. I recommend the 24" to anyone.

Oh... and my wife loves it too. The cable internet screams on this computer compared to my old 17" swivel monitor.

Darn, that's a good deal and NOW Amazon is showing that imac for $1718 before the $100 rebate and free shipping!

Shoot, I just bought a refurb from the apple store for less, but after taxes, I'll actually be MORE than $1618! Bummer, guess I should have tried Amazon, but I've always had very good luck with the Apple refurbs, so I felt like I was probably getting as good a deal as I was going to find anywhere...
Guess I didn't consider the "rebates" that are out there.

Oh well, win some, lose some.

Nice find!
So, am I going to LOVE This thing or what?

I'm hoping it exceeds my expectations as well as my MBP has.

Dang... I looked everywhere possible for the best deal and Amazon lowered their price a couple days after I ordered. I was monitoring prices for a month.

Oh well.

Yes, you should absolutely love it.

That's funny, my wife had pretty much the same reaction when I came home with a 24 inch iMac.
