I think the update will be when a new "X" A chip arrives. That will likely be next year as I think A14X is the next chip.

The current cream of the crop Apple ARM APU is the A12X Bionic, so the A13-series APUs would be next in line...

The iPad Pro's have been on a roughly 18 month life cycle. Earliest would be this fall, but if they keep the 18 month window then likely Spring 2020.
