At this point I think it’s better to wait until September and make a decision based on the lineup then. If you plan to travel and use your phone extensively for making photos this summer, you might want to get a new iPhone already though, since it’s a huge improvement over the 7.

As others have said, I would also have a look at the regular iPhone 14 or the rumoured 14 Max. The price difference between regular and pro is quite big and imho not really justified for non-geeks. Also, think twice before getting the Max models. Those phones are really huge. If you come from a 4.7" screen, I think a 6.1" screen should be enough. But it’s up to you of course!

don’t let colour be a deciding factor? sierra blue is literally the main reason i upgraded from my 11 pro. colour is a big factor, especially the yearly limited ones
Yes it is very personal. I personally would never let colour be a deciding factor over a new design + performance.

I would say: wait two or three months and then, go for the iPhone 13PM (it will be cheaper as soon as the iPhone 14 is released). For what we know, the iPhone 14 is yet another evolution of the current generation. It won't be a revolution. I have the iPhone 13 Pro and it is an incredible device: extremely fast, pleasant to use, with a very good camera. It is meant to last several years!

I'd say wait 2.5 months.
If the 14Pro is amazing, you'll be glad to get it. If not, you'll very likely be able to get the 13Pro cheaper than now from third party retailers (or if you absolutely want to buy from Apple, buy the day before the announcement just in case, as mentioned by other people)
If you're coming from an OG SE or a 7, I don't think you'll want to get a Pro Max, I own a 13Pro and it is painfully bigger than my previous XS, which was already painfully bigger than my 6S (same form factor than your 7).

Regarding colors, I have the blue 13Pro and honestly I preferred the blue of the 12Pro but I use an Apple case anyway so the colour of the phone is only visible on the camera bump. I wouldn't have picked the 12 Pro just for the color.
High end iPhones are so expensive now, and it sounds like you tend to hold own to your phones for many years so I guess you are (or should) be using a case anyway. And who knows the 14Pro might get the same blue or one you like even more!

TL;DR: buy the macbook now and hold on to your phones for 2 more months.
This has exactly been my final decision. I'll purchase the MacBook Air, so that I can put to rest my partners good old 2012 MBP, and postpone the decision until the iPhone 14 releases!

Thanks

We are just 2.5 months away so i suggest you to wait and see what the pro versions offer you, if you think they are heavily prices, you can get either the regular 14 or 13 as 13 will still be on sale on apple.com

Hi guys, I have a question to share with you all since I'm having a hard time making up my mind, and I could really use some external view/advice on it.

My partner and I own the iPhone SE (2016) and iPhone 7 respectively. Our phones have been showing their age for the past year, specially with storage and battery (we both have 32GB models), and of course, its that time of the year where one needs to get a new phone.

I've been waiting all year for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max to release to buy them, but a few things have changed and I wanted to share my thoughts:

  1. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will definitely go up in price, here in Europe I'm guessing about 150€ (inflation and devaluation of the euro).
  2. If I wait for the IP14PM, the IP13PM will no longer be listed on their site, and I'm not really cool with buying them at third-party retailers (this is due to how other shops handle warranty, returns, etc.)
  3. We really like the Sierra-Blue colour, and we're afraid that the new colours won't convince us (other than the regular colours).
  4. I also need to get her a new MacBook, specifically the MBA, which has already gone up 100€.
I know for sure that either the IP13PM or the IP14PM will blow our expectations since it's such a big improvement. However, the thought of buying the IP13PM now, and allocating the possible 300-400€ price difference to the purchase of the MacBook Air has stopped me from seeing the IP14PM as the ideal purchase.

Also, given the rumours regarding the iPhone 14Pro and Pro Max, I don't think I'll be really missing out on that much, since the idea of using the extra money I'm not spending on the IP14PM for the MBA is becoming more appealing.

The question is, at only 3 months from the possible release of the iPhone 14Pro and Pro Max, do you think I should wait and get those models? (at the extra cost). Am I going to miss out on a lot just by buying now what I need? (We can obviously hold on to our devices for a little longer, but saving a little bit of money that can be used towards the MBA is also ideal).

Please share your thoughts with me, any advice is very much appreciated. Thanks!
I'm in the same boat. Handed over my 12 to family and in a similar predicament in that I'd rather go via apple. I fear the 14 pro will be out of my price range so as soon as is possible im jumping on to the 13pro lineup as that blue is just so beautiful!

There’s always something new and better around the corner.

Coming from an SE and 7 the 13PM will blow you away.

Get the 13 and oh the cash towards the MBA.

I’d just buy the thing now and upgrade when next mid gen comes out. I swapped my Z flip yesterday for a 13 pro. I can’t see the 14 being that amazing.

Is there any reason why, going from an SE and a 7, you need the Pro and/or Pro Max? Because, I'm pretty sure you'd find that even a 12 mini blows the lid off of both of those and that a standard 13 would probably be more than enough. That said, it's a bad time to buy one considering the price on the 13 will surely drop by a bit once the 14 series releases, which won't be too long from now.

Depends on what you are looking for. If you just want a really really good phone you can't go wrong with the iPhone 13. But if some of the new tech intrigues you then it might be worth waiting. Keep in mind all Apple product updates are incremental compared to previous models. The iPhone 13 doesn't feel like junk compared to the 14, the 12 doesn't feel like junk compared to the 13, etc etc. By doing this they dont devalue their product line and customers rarely feel "ripped off".

Personally the screen tech of the iPhone 14 PM has me intrigued. Always on Display, take it or leave it will likely be a feature of IGZO, LTPO and a bunch of other acronyms that when combined and managed properly can make the screen itself much more battery efficient. Meaning the more time your display is on the more you'll take advantage of such tech.

That said, Apple likes to maintain about the same battery life meaning they could very well reduce the batteries size for similar performance to previous models. The Apple Watch is a good example, current model has a smaller battery than the Apple Watch 3 but gets as good/better battery life. Apple does this for a good reason, if they can get away with a smaller battery from tech efficiency enhancement then later models can get a battery if a new piece of tech is added by upping the battery again when that time comes with having a spec that is lower battery life on the latest and greatest phone.

Again though, do you need (or just want) the latest and greatest? If not you can't go wrong with the iPhone 13.

I understand the OP's dilemma. OP, please take the many comments here with considerations that they are from the US. For us outside the US, Apple price increases in this inflation time is real. Apple is already selling the 2022 SE at higher price than the iphone 11 in my country. That's how weird inflation has affected pricing. I shudder to think how much Apple would price the 14 in my country.

Here are the cons of waiting for the 14 to be out
- it will not only be more expensive, Apple might even increase the price of the other models
- the 13 Pro Max model and color you want might not be available anymore or harder to find, and you dislike buying iphone from resellers

My advise is, if you have the budget, just buy the 13 PM now. Any other time I would advise you to wait, but due to the uncertainty of inflation and significant price hikes, get it now if you can.

Commenters from the US won't understand your dilemma as they follow Apple's US MSRP. Us from other markets completely share your concerns and dilemma during this uncertain times.

After reading only the title of your post, I was going to say definitely wait, but after reading your entire post, it may make more sense for you to order now.

Some of the things I’m not particularly worried about but seem like they may be important to you are the color, not wanting to buy from anywhere else other than Apple, and the risk of increased cost. Personally I would definitely wait for the 14Pro but I’m not too worried about missing Sierra blue, I’m not too worried if there’s a small price bump, and if I wanted to save some money and get the 13 after the 14 is out, I’m sure I could find a supplier I’m comfortable with.

One thing that others have said that I agree with… save yourself the $100 and get the Pro instead of the ProMax. It seems saving money is important, and just going from the SE and 7 to the 13Pro or 14Pro will still be a big increase in screen real estate. Jumping to the ProMax may be frustratingly cumbersome when you’re accustomed to how your current phones fit in your pockets/bags/hands/etc.

Don't get the pro, max is worth the extra for the bigger screen and battery.
Buy now.

I made the same upgrade that you're considering - 7 to 13PM. It's a huge upgrade, but it's also a huge price tag. 900+ euros is a lot of money, and especially with the inflation the euro is facing, the 14PM is going to be even more. It's going to depend on how badly you need an upgrade, and what your expected workload is. Speculation about the 14PM is fine, but if you really need the upgrade now just go for the 13PM. If you can wait, then definitely take others advice in this thread and order it before the September event, and cancel if you think the 14PM is better.

A funny aside about colors - in December 2021 I almost went for the 11PM instead of 13PM because I really like green, but I decided the 13PM's features were worth sacrificing the color. Just my luck that a few months later they release a green 13PM lol. Hopefully a similar situation won't happen to the day one 14PM buyers.

As someone who prefers to buy directly from Apple as well, I think you should go and get the 13 PM right now. Apple will definitely stop selling the 13 series in their stores once the 14 series gets announced.

Furthermore, the 14 PM is likely to cost even more than the 13 PM when it first came out. I recently bought the 13 PM last month, and I gotta say. Once you get acquainted with it, you’ll immediately know that this particular phone will last 3-4 years or even a couple more years than that. The built quality, the Pro Motion display and the battery life are all excellent features.

Mind you that if Apple follows the trend, the 14 series might have weaker battery life than their 13 counterparts. I speculate as such because the 11 series had excellent battery life when they first came out. The 12 series was a downgrade, and then Apple bump the battery life again in the 13. So if pattern follows, the 14 series might not last long as the 13 counterparts in the battery life department. This is just speculation from me so don’t take this too seriously.

If you’re outside of the US, I would suggest to go ahead and get the 13 series now in case of a price increase with the 14 series. If you’re in the US, I would suggest to wait for the announcement of the 14 and make tour decision then. I’ve been saving all year for the 14 Pro Max, so money won’t be a problem for me come September. I’m also on a 2 year upgrade cycle and don’t see me upgrading every year anymore.

Wait until September:
You want the best camera and thus image quality you can get. Perhaps 5x zoom and better night time photography.
New colors.
Longer iOS support.
Faster SOC you can't use for anything.
Smaller notch if you are into those kind of weird fetisches.
Maybe better battery time if they go with 3nm SOCs.
Likely no Sierra Blue.
Likely much more expensive.
Bigger camera bump, if you are not into those things.
You can join all the annoying and pointless "I BOUGHT A PHONE OMGZ IT IS IN SHANGHAI NOW OMGZ FEDEX DIDNT RING MY DOORBELL OMGZ IT IS SO BEAUTIFUL I WILL MARRY IT" threads.

Buy now:
Significantly cheaper price is likely.
Sierra Blue.
You get it immediately.
Great phone.
You won't have the newest gadget in two months.

If you didn’t want a pro, I’d say go for a 13 now, because there won’t be a huge difference in the 13/14. But for me, the notch going away in the pros is huge (guess I am into those kind of weird fetishes), and I’d definitely wait for that.
