HI All. I am getting some good offers for the M1 iPad Pro 12.9 but also know that the M2 is not far away. Wondering if I should buy the M1 iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard now or wait for the M2 iPad Pro. My usage is office work, Lumafusion editing for my new YouTube channel and as a sidecar to my 16" M1 Pro Macbook. What can the M2 iPad Pro do that the M1 iPad Pro cannot ?

iPad Pro is already overpriced for rather limited set of features and ports that come with it and iPadOS in its current shape and size. Wait for M2 iPad reviews, if you can live without iPad Pro for another 4-12 months and then decide for yourself if those extra few hundreds of $$$ are really worth to pay for M2 iPad Pro.
Slightly longer reply -> Given that Apple rised prices on both M2 MBP 13 with no other changes to the stale design and on new, refreshed M2 MBA, probably due to chip shortages, inflation and "new redesign" for the next big, shiny thing, I presume that M2 iPads might get more expensive as well, tho IMHO they are already overpriced as they are thanks to lack of ports and limited ipadOS(which might get what some folks want with iPadOS16 update, but we will see) and overly expensive and lacking Magic Keyboard.
Thus you could get M1 iPad Pro if you really MUST have one for your workflow and convenience and can score one at a decent price.
If its not a burning issue then you could wait until release of M2 iPads and see for yourself if paying extra for one is worth it or not.
I love my M1 12.9 Pro, yet, after one year of owning it I can wholeheartedly say that its way too overpriced no matter how good looking and working it is.
Perhaps not as much overpriced for USA buyers with constant sales and upgrades/buybacks, but for me, in N-Europe with already high prices on everything, I would, if I would want to get one today, probably steer towards M1 iPad Air in combination with either regular M1 Air or M1 Pro 14" Macbook for the best of both worlds. Situation was a bit different a year ago when I got myself 12.9, so there are plenty more choices for iPad/laptop buyers today.

If you can, I’d wait a bit. Even if the M2 iPad Pro has no worthy feature for you, its release will drop the price of the M1 iPad Pro for sure (not dramatically, but probably more than the deal you have at the moment)
M2 will be slightly faster on paper (and there isn't really anything on iPad that could take good use of even the M1), but that's it... and of course it will be supported a tiny bit longer
but honestly... an MBA, especially the M1 might actually be the better fit. M2 isvery too expensive, at least here in Europe.
In my opinion, iPad Pros only offer more for people who are actually drawing or painting on that thing. Most other people are better off with a fanless MBA

One more variable is non-processor related - will it finally move to a landscape camera? If you plan to use your iPP in landscape mode or with a keyboard a lot, consider waiting because I absolutely hate always covering my camera when held in landscape, and worse still I look like I’m looking away from anyone I’m talking to on FaceTime when it is in my Magic Keyboard.
I did the whole "start all over" thing a few months ago. Went with an iPad mini and, just like you, probably will also not own an iPad Pro again for the foreseeable future. When something leapfrogs my tool of choice, like the M1 Mac did to my iPad Pro, it's simply a no-brainer.
This doesn't happen very often in tech, and it's absolutely glorious. It doesn't benefit me to stick my head in the sand when a tool like the M1/M2 Mac is on the market. I want all the power I can afford, and iPad doesn't have it anymore.
Agree, I sold my M1 12.9 a few months ago while still some value in it. Tried a 11" just recently but for $1200AUD here for a base model wifi I didn't see the value and is way overpriced imo, you can get a M1 MB air on sale now for $150 more.
With a 16 " MBP Pro on your desk, you likely survive until the M2 arrives and then make a choice. The M2 will not be a major upgrade. The bigger news would be a rumoured 14 inch iPad Pro rather than if it contains an M2 or not.

Hmm you are right. But 12.9 is really pushing the limit to Ipad size and a 14 inch would be too unwieldy. This iPad Cellular version would be for travel and on the go so I am always connected and can do work, light editing and other stuff on the go. Also I miss zipping out my MacBook Air M1 to have a quick email check or refer something. The MacBook Pro 16 is more like a desktop replacement which I won't travel with. So weighing everything. Lets see.

People in my family often come to me when they want to switch to Apple or upgrade something they already own from Apple to something newer. The complaint about price usually comes up. This doesn't have a whole lot to do with the original thread, my apologies, but if you buy a $300 laptop at Walmart just to stick it to Apple somehow, my opinion is that the joke's really on you. In a year or two that computer will be useless and broken and you'll be back to square one. I've even had a couple of people in my family learn this lesson two or three times before they switch.
My opinion: a "cheap" laptop/desktop that will probably struggle to run the latest Windows release and will absolutely crumble under the OS once the first Service Pack hits is actually a complete WASTE of money rather than a saver of money. You'll just end up buying the same crappy computer every 3 years when the old one dies. Conversely, if I wanted to use my current MacBook Pro for 10 years and just ignore everything else Apple releases, it would most likely hum along just fine until I was ready for an upgrade.
Unless you can get a great deal I would wait. Also since this is for work, you can claim it as an itemized expense if you do itemize your taxes. For more people, the standard deduction makes more sense.
I highly recommmend waiting for the MacBook Air launch as like the iPad, it has no fans or cooling. The M2 chip severely throttles the MacBook Pro 13 with 1 fan. Imagine what will happen with a fan-less design.

I just picked up the iPad Pro 12.9 M1 with 256 GB storage For $850 (open box). Based off the throttling happening with the M2 and the recent rumors, I am not hearing much that is getting me excited for the next generation. Plus it will cost a lot more to buy the new version than $850.
Nope, got it from a major seller on eBay - quickshipelectronics. They sell recent electronics that are typically open box and look new. You get a nice discount and they have a free 30 day return.
