I generally feel that you buy when you're ready to buy based on your current situation. If your current computer isn't up to snuff, just buy. There will always be another around the corner that'll be better than the one you buy today. That advice is as old as the hills, I realize.

I also generally advise getting the very best you can possibly afford, but as I get older and my priorities change (and as the tasks I do get more distributed among several devices), I find myself adhering to that less and less.

Wait for 8k. Not gimmicky inbetweens like 5k. ( LG has confirmed 8k displays for Apple soon )

Probably happening next year. Upgraded Thunderbolt Display with 8k a shoe in with an upgraded Mac Pro.

iMac 8k will follow a few months after.

( still love my 5k, btw )
8K?? My eyes aren't that good!! Honestly, the 5k I have produces an image that is much better than my less than perfect eyes can see. With as good as the 5K is, I really don't think the 8K or 16K or whatever K they come up with will look any better.

That reminds me of a friend of mine from a long time past called "Bubba" (yes, that is really his name). This was back in 1990's, the days when a 486 computer was fast. He said he was waiting for the Pentium 66 computers to come out. He waited and then when they came out, he said he was going to wait for the Pentium 75, and then finally the Pentium 90. I then told Bubba that computer technology was like watching a very long train go by while you were standing on the platform. I told him, "Bubba, you know where this train started, but you can't see the end of it. If you don't get on the train sometime, you'll just be left standing on the platform and never get anywhere."

I moved on to another company and I never found out if Bubba ever did get on that train.

Thats awesome :)

May I ask you for what Kind of work you are using your imac?

Photography, music production, simple web surfing?

SW development, which iI normally RDP back to my work and no real power house is needed but big screen is a plus.

Photo as my hobby(wife complained I spent too much in camera gears, the white one especially) I use LR and PS. I also external 27" Samsung PLS connecting to iMac via thunderbolt port.

Some video editing... Very seldom.

The rest is surfing the net looking for new toy.

Sounds good dude!

How is the Performance With this imac using programs like LR and PS?

I'm still chugging along on my 2006 20" Intel Core Duo on Snow Leopeard. It's struggling at the moment, not far off the 10 year mark though. I think I'm going to bite the bullet and upgrade when next year's iMacs release. Keen to get the 27".

I do have a 2011 11" Air, which surprisingly struggles with flash. Chugs quite a bit. I'm still on Mountain Lion on that.

My desktop is also a 2011 27" iMac but it's relatively fast due to booting from an SSD; machine boots in approximately 8 seconds. Might want to consider the SSD option if you're keeping it.

I shall consider that option. Thanks for the suggestion!

Is it too early to start 'Buy now or wait for 2017 iMac, 2018 iMac, 2019 iMac, 2020 iMac' etc. etc. threads?

I want to scream every time I see another of these threads.

Wow! You got the BIG ONE! That is a beast, indeed!
Have fun with your new iMac!
I'm going downstairs to rip open my box now

Update:
Still waiting on the migration from my old Mac. I have about an hour to go.
While I'm waiting I'll entertain you with a little story.
When I was looking at the new iMacs in the Apple Store I noticed that they had the new track pad on all of the iMacs. I had to ask them for a mouse to use. Then they had to find one and pair it with the iMac I was using.
Now for the punch line . . .
Was I disappointed when I looked through the box and didn't find that new track pad?
Okay, yes I know that track pads have not been included in the past but why would they have them on all of their iMacs in the store and no mouse? Does that not give you the impression that the track pads must come with new iMacs? {holding up "laugh" sign] o_O
Well I think apple is showing their trackpads to sell Them... I think thats "normal" because they want to make money :)

Im looking forward to hear what are your first impressions about your new imac

Amazing! Have fun With your imac :)

I will buy an imac With:
I5 3.3 ghz
2 TB Fusion Drive
Radeon m9 395

In 2 weeks i will buy this beast :D

Thank you
That's the model I picked, its fast gorgeous and I had zero buyers remorse :D

Congrats and enjoy your new baby

I'm so glad they didn't. I don't like track pads. I'd rather use a mouse :)

Yeah, I know but I still think they should have equipped all of their iMacs on the floor with a mouse as well.
I suppose, in the end, it was just a case of wishful thinking on my end ;)

I one word . . . what I can say, about my new iMac, is "wow!"
The first thing that popped out is the speed. I like the slim profile, most likely partially the result of taking out the disc drive. I burned quite a few CDs and DVDs and also installed software from discs frequently. While I transition (actually wean myself from my dependency on discs) to other forms of media (which includes utilizing digital downloads of software instead of physical discs) I'll still use my old iMac. I realize that I could get an external disc drive for my new iMac but that would defeat the purpose and impede the weaning process. The next thing that popped, more like jumped, out on my lap is the gorgeous Retina display. I also welcome features, such as hand off, that were not available on my older iMac. In a nutshell, I'm glad I got it. Getting the "middle of the road" model was a good choice for me and fits my needs.
Keeping an old computer after I purchase a new one is a first for me. I'll see how long I, ultimately, keep it. ;)

Great! I look forward to your review. It will be there before you know it!
Damnit. I thought I'd get my 2006 iMac past the 10 year mark. Now you guys are making me really want to pick up a nice 27".

Go for it!

I was a PC person for 30+ years (Even started to build them the last 10 years) and always putted off buying an Apple for I played around on a friends Apple for a while. I didn't like it for I wasn't use to the OS X and I have to say you can't just test drive an Apple computer for an hour or two - you have to give it a good test drive to see if you like it. Sorry going off-topic a little, back on topic. The point I'm trying to make is that I decided to take the plunge and buy my first Apple computer (27" iMac with 5k Retina Display) and I didn't get the top of the line for I know from experience from building computers that it's just a Gearhead thing about topping a computer's specs off. I don't mind waiting a few seconds more for a video to render for example. Anyways, I kind of can kick myself for waiting this long to buy my first Apple and wished I had done it sooner. Buying a computer is like buying a car, as soon as you buy a computer the newer model is just around the corner or has already made it's debut the day you got your computer. Then there's always someone saying why didn't you get those specs for you should had gotten these specs? You'll never going to pull the trigger or regret not pulling the trigger sooner, for all a computer is a tool for your creativity or productivity. This is why I like Apple and stop building PCs for I can concentrate on creating things instead of spending a month or two fine tuning the computer that I just built (An you are always tinkering around with a new build losing sight on why you have a computer). It's the same thing when buying a new computer, for all the time waiting and planning on that computer the time could had been spent using the computer. I'm not saying not to do any research on the next purchase, but speculating on next year's computer models is the same thing as building or tinkering around with a computer's hardware in my opinion.

I wonder if we'll see a 21" iMac before then, it is on Broadwell after all. I can see apple rolling out the 21" iMacs this summer, and then in the fall maybe the 5k models.

I wouldn't put money on that, but I will say that I'd not be surprised by it.

They seem pretty much mitilaristic when it comes to up Dating their products

March - laptops
Sept - desktops
Oct - iPhone/iPad

When ever they feel like it Mini and Mac Pro haha
