Actually the new one with 2.5GHz and 512GB SSD is $2429 (education discount) and the old one can be had via amazon as 2.5GHz/dGPU/512GB for $2399. So the prices are the same. It's a hard choice because in a year you can upgrade the old one to a 1TB SSD for a few hundred bucks. The new one can't be upgraded ever. In my experience the SSD will be limiting. I always had to upgrade my hard drives every two years because I just have more and more data, pics, movies.

Sorry that's a bad price comparison.

You are factoring in a student discount from apple against an amazon model. And OP is in Europe

I just bought a 2015 15" refurb max model for £1000 less than similar spec for 2016 , both from apple, this is what the OP means buy price difference in EU.
[doublepost=1481275299][/doublepost]I bought the 2015 max return and 2016 at the same time coming from a 2012.

Using side by side and deciding which one is right for me. I like the new one, though my brain says go the much cheaper 2015 and solid product v buggy new one. Having bought a 2012 I look back and see that as a mistake , the fixed 2013 model was much better and I would not be looking at upgrading at the moment, in my opinion avoid rev A products, especially first batch....

Buy the new one and try it for the 14 day return period, if not happy, return and get the old one

Actually it makes sense to compare the lowest real world prices that we have to pay for products with full warranty. For the mbp this is currently the refurb or amazon price for the 2015 vs. the student discount for the 2016 model. Makes no sense to compare list prices because that's not what we pay.

Only a subset can get student discount .

the one for 2079 has only a 256GB SSD and no dGPU. So the price for the model I want (and that compares to the 2016 model) is $2399 for now.

You might look around a bit more. In June I bought a new 2015 with 512GB and dGPU for a little over $2100 from Amazon. Some people were getting them off eBay for $1900+ or $2000 with Applecare.

I know since the introduction of the 2016 15", the 2015 15" have gone up in price in the used market, so they are definitely desirable, and this may effect your ability to get a deal on the 2015. But, give a couple of non-Apple sources a try.
