How is that an argument?
It is not an argument, just a thought. 😊
It was released in 2020 and not replaced by the m2 series until 2022. Last year was m3, this year is m4, already in iPads and about to come out in Mac’s. So is the m3 I guess no good either?
Considering my MBP is still working quite well, running Sequoia, with cycle count at 288, battery health at 89%, I'd probably wait until M4 would get old by about few years.

I will never use it for anything more than what I listed. With that said, is the base configuration enough for me and should last me 5 or more years? I have been reading on the topic of RAM and so many people are saying "you need 16GB of RAM, you never know what you will want to do on the machine in the future, and you need 16gb for this and that, etc". All the stuff people mention doing, video stuff etc I will never do.
You'd be far better off with an iPad and a keyboard/trackpad case to be honest.

To use the Steve Jobs analogy of about a decade ago, using a laptop for this is basically using a truck (or maybe a helicopter; that's more dangerous) to go get your groceries instead of a car.

The iPad is a safer, more portable web browser, a MUCH better e-book reader, has better cameras, consumes less storage and you can get the keyboard of your choice - which is easily replaceable if you damage it.

A base model iPad or iPad Air (if you want 13" screen) would do the job for you, maybe just bump the storage on that to 256 GB.

The iPad will also double as a note-taking device if you get a pencil for it down the track. You can also use the pencil to fill out PDF delivered forms in your email and send them back without needing to print them etc.

So even though you argue against someone buying an m1 device that’s a few years old, you go against the same advice for a future upgrade to a few year old chip?… that makes sense

You are a free person, you decide what you do. As for me, I won't buy an experimental device that was practically immediately discontinued.

Still singing that song, even though it’s completely false. By that logic, every previous m series chip was “immediately” discontinued as they have all been replaced in roughly the same time frame by their next successor.

Goodluck to you though kid

The M1 MacBook Air was on sale from November 2020 all the way to March 2024. 3 years and 4 months.

M1 iMac, iPad Air, and Mac Mini were on sale for around more than 2 years before being replaced.

I don't see it as a product that is immediately discontinued.

What's produced has to be sold, at least the bulk of it. One can still find unopened M1 Macs at very interesting prices. So, buying one at ~40% of its initial price might be a temptation, but why waste money, when there's M3 around?

3 newer M chips coming out one after the other within 3 years tells the buyer what one should do. Anyway, as we are all free people, we decide what we do. I'll wait until M4 becomes old.

Of course it’s preferable to buy the newer M3. But consider those who are in a tight budget, the M1 is still a good option since it’s not dramatically slow compared to M2 or M3. A much better option than going for Intel Macs, which are actually a waste of money.

3 newer M chips within 3 years… So you’re saying that the M2/M3 generation lasted shorter than the “immediately discontinued” M1?

hahaha....

Stick with your insecure power gobbling furnace then I guess. Apple has shipped WAY more firestorm/icestorm based cores than intel shipped x86 in the same time-frame.

In the same sort of time frame, intel shipped ice lake (which I also own) and tiger lake. Speaking of experimental cores that were very rapidly discontinued (and didn't even make it onto the desktop) because they were crap.

Its OK to admit it's out of your budget / replacement cycle without making up insane coping mechanisms dude.

M1 was introduced at the end of 2020, which is less than 4 years today, and gone now, except from those who sell unsold stock lying in stores, or used ones. If you are buying for the first time, and tight with money, and like to risk, well why not? As usual, the decision is yours.😏

Sure, some people are sold to a company, some people are free. On the matter of "budget," I've never taken a loan in my life. 😊

I and others keep trying to tell you, but you’re being deliberately obtuse on this topic.

I’ve said my case already, so let’s just agree to disagree.

I decide what to buy, and when to buy. A base level MBA might be alright as in the topic heading, sometime in the future, but with M3 or M4 chip. Won't touch M1. By that time, a base level M chip MBA would have 16GB by default. Also, I won't buy at the release date, but would wait, usually the price drops rapidly within few months. If you already have a M1 MBA or MBP, would you get a good resale price?

Yup, I wouldn’t waste anymore time. He’s literally doing it on purpose. The m1 series wasn’t discontinued any sooner than any of the other M series Mac’s. In fact was sold directly from apple the longest. But acknowledging that would ruin his flawed logic, so he would rather purposely ignore the facts in front of his face.

Clueless
