The six-core, D-300, 16GB, 1TB storage would be a good choice for music creation using the more demanding sample libraries.

I think super quick loading of samples for a project and hopefully not needing a slave computer will be a more eloquent solution.

The 4-core/D300 entry-level model will do me nicely, except 512 GB Flash BTO. If only Apple would get a move on, since I need to sell my 2012 15-inch MBP Retina first...:p

IF I go with a new Mac Pro, I'll configure the D700 upgrade first, and then figure out core count after that. I'll never make any money with the machine, but I do like whatever I'm working on to get done faster. So I'll buy whatever I can afford assuming the fastest video cards.

I'll configure it with Apple's base memory, then upgrade through OWC. The standard, smallest SSD available will do fine since all of my storage will be via external enclosures (bleah ... $$$).

Those of you going D700 (or D500 even), what software are you using that can take advantage of them?

Premiere Pro CC, which is already multi-GPU capable, and is also OpenCL aware. A lot of the effects I add to my vids are GPU-accelerated, and with a quick text file deletion, I could also use the GPUs for exports.

Really want d700s either with a quad or possible hex but I don't think I will be able to afford it so I will most likely go with hex and d500s

6 core, 1 TB storage, D500, maybe I can be persuaded to get the D700 with a fair price, but I fear that is unlikely.

You guys wish this will be the price
1 tb drive will run 2k from apple

this is not a pc

just look at the imac..
256GB is +$200 over the base drive
1TB is +$1000 over the base

so i think it's logical to assume the 1TB drive in the nmp will be +$800 over the base 256gb

6-core for me

I plan to get a 6-core nMP. I currently have a 2010 6-core MP. If the thunderbolt display is also updated, I will also get a display to go with the nMP. I will definitely go with a 512 GB SSD.

you guys are dreaming
you will be buying a mac pro so cooled mac pro i still call it mac mini Pro
Apple always charges extra for premium parts and this drive will have something extra in just to get extra 400 because they can, and you all will pay for it because you can only get from apple
it would be so much easier with plug and play, but thats why there is no BR or DVD drive in there so no one can plug anything in there
I will wait and pass on first 2 revisions and wait for something I can work with
Just waiting for 3 monitors and 5 drives plug in into that new mac to see how well it does in benchmarks
and if it will run two 4k monitors at 60Hz and one HD Wacom tablet plus some USB 2 and USB 3 drives and if it will kill my 12 core mac pro by 100% I may look at it
(Yes USB 3.0 is the only cross platform between PC and Apple)

wait.. what?

I think the $4k hex core D500's is probably the sweet spot. Looking at my 2009 MP ($2.5k) with upgrades ($2k+) this price doesn't look so bad.

The D300 is a somewhat pokey GPU, I'd at least upgrade to D500's unless you really don't and won't need better graphics capability.

That is the question I'm asking myself before the release should i go for the base model quad core or hex core bundle?

My use is final cut pro x, making v logs and youtube videos daily zoo i wonder?... hmm

After pricing out some similar spec'ed machines like the Z420 I realized the nMP isn't that expensive. I added the same 4c 3.7Ghz CPU, a single 2GB gfx card + 256GB SSD and it was within a few hundred dollars.

Since I mainly use Adobe CC (design) and Lightroom (Photography) I may just end up getting the 4c + d500 cards so I don't end up with another GT120 that I can't replace for 5 years.

I'm on the fence. 6 or 8 core, D500 or D700, depending on price. Definitely a 500 GB SSD.

I do some rendering in Poster, but thats a hobby. I do some gaming, but not that much. I run VMware Fusion regularly and I have a number of things that take time that I run in background. I really want a 4K monitor that is over 40" which is one reason I want the nMP for its thunderbolt.

IF I buy the nMP, it will be the very cheapest configuration.

Since the only "demanding" application I'll be running is Logic (music production), I am simply looking for more juice than my 2007 MBP.

Once the various sites have tested it vs other Mac types, it will come down to how much better is it than the next closest Macs, which undoubtably will be MUCH cheaper.

If Apple does not modify Logic to take advantage of the beefed up GPU power in the nMP, then it will be hard to justify paying extra $$$ for HW I will never benefit from. But actual tests have yet to be run…and nobody knows at this point if Logic will "grow into the nMP".

Bottom line….looking for the best bang for the buck for running Logic free of latency and CPU overload issues (with hopefully a bit more "upgradeability" than the other Mac models).

Real time audio might not be GPU compatible. The latency of moving over to the GPU might be too high.

Honestly... a Mac Mini might be a better fit for you. Quad core, with extra RAM and an SSD would be a much better fit. Especially if the next one comes with the fast PCI-E SSD. Basically an entry level Mac Pro without the GPUs.

As an FYI, I updated the original post with a new table of the current breakdown.

If you still haven't voted in the poll, go for it... I'll update the table periodically.

The nMP is priced on par with other "premium" workstations. Considering your getting new technology such as thunderbolt 2 & and PCIe-SSD's, dual workstation graphics as standard, its a pretty good deal.

Can you not use one of the other existing threads to voice your issues? (Not that you have posted anything new here that you have not before). You seem pretty angry. Maybe it's time to look for another computer that is not made by Apple?

I've changed my mind but can't change my choice. Was getting a quad D500 BTO and now am getting the Hex D500 standard second tier

hehe... spec creep. You're probably not the only one. The longer they let us linger on the options, the more likely we are to convince ourselves we need more/better! :D
