You're probably a good person, so don't take this the wrong way, but first of all, if you buy stolen property knowingly, you go to jail. In every jurisdiction. And the post you put up here can be used against you in court. I would hope you wouldn't even consider taking a chance on it. Just buy a new one. If you can't, I'd wait until you can. Good luck.

The only possibilities are scam/bait and switch, or that they fell off the back of a truck.

If it fell off the back of a truck, you don't want it. iDevices don't do well after dropping them
