UPS are correct they have no obligation to the person they deliver to. Their contract is with the person who paid hem to ship the item.

Your beef is with the seller. For all you know it was damaged before it was shipped to you. At the very least it was because it wasn't properly packed that it got damaged. I have had three Mac Pros delivered to me & none of those was damaged but they were all in proper Mac Pro cardboard shipping cartons.

You can either reject the Mac Pro & get a refund or negotiate a good price reduction. It would forever irritate me that the foot is irreparably damaged & unless this system was an amazing bargain I would insist on a refund & buy another undamaged system. There are plenty of Mac Pros on the market

Just a question as I couldn't find any information online about: Can I buy and install 1333MHz memory in the Mac Pro now (4,1 firmware) and use it as 1066MHz until I do the firmware update and purchase a compatible CPU? The information I've found online doesn't make it clear if I can only use the faster memory at the slower speed, only that it will work after the upgrades. Just don't fancy buying the extra memory now, to need to repurchase should I upgrade the CPU later on.
Yes, you can use 1333 MHz - or higher. I'm using 1866 MHz Dimms pulled from 2013 Mac Pros in my machine.

@pastrychef and @scott.n Thanks, good to know so I'm not buying twice.

@nigelbb Yes it is infuriating, UPS don't seem to want to know me. They said that "all they do" is fill in a form and give it to the seller, then from there it would be between me and the seller as to what to do. Im fairly confident that the unit wasn't damaged as the seller sent me additional images of the unit when I asked, and in none of them it's clear the damage wasn't there. He even went as far as to send me images showing the scratches on the unit.

I guess it's a lesson learnt, just a bit of a bummer. I am however happy I decided on the Mac Pro, it's much quieter than I expected and looks so cool (well other than it's casual lean that is). I'll order my memory tonight and next I'll be looking into upgrading the wireless and bluetooth card.

On a related note I have noticed that the cMP rings when someone calls me on my phone, I thought that this required AC wireless and bluetooth 4.0? The cMP only has bluetooth 2.1 and is connected to the network via ethernet. Are calls communicated over a LAN?

It's the seller who has to claim from UPS. It would be just the same if it was the Royal Mail or FedEx. You need to come to some arrangement with the seller. He gives you a full or partial refund & then claims off UPS for the cost of the damage. You really don't need to put up with a wonky foot on your Mac Pro.

@nigelbb Yes I understand, just feel annoyed at UPS can't even pretend to be sympathetic. The seller is working with me, just not too happy about UPS wanting to take the Mac away for about 2 weeks :(

Anyway I never intended this thread to become a UPS bashing so I'll leave it at that.

I am working on a claim with an Amazon seller for the same reason, though mine was double-boxed with styrofoam bubbles between the two boxes and the feet STILL got bent during transit.

With the feet so easily bent, it makes me wonder about this bench:

@ActionableMango That's a pretty cool use for old Power Macs. I'm sure they're pretty expensive. I must admit I went at the leg with a rubber mallet to try and coax it back into shape. Hit the thing pretty hard and it didn't bend, can only think that the weight behind the unit was the culprit.

You may disable BT (or LAN) to check if you can still receive the call, then you will have the answer.

@Bytehoven The cMP looked pretty well packaged, it was inside a large box with packing peanuts, then another box with the machine inside wrapped in a massive amount of bubble wrap and some small empty boxes to act as cushions. I think I was extremely unlucky that the inner and outer boxes hand touched on one side and I guess that was where the damaged occurred when dropped.

@nigelbb Yeah I think that was where the damage came from. I don't know 100% but I did see him drop it down on the corner and it's damaged so I may be putting one and one together and getting three. I don't know.

@phillyboy82 You're absolutely right, I was a little dumb struck and since he didn't require a signature he just left right away. After a LOT of communication with UPS they are unlikely to pay me any compensation at all, offering the seller up to the cost of postage instead. They then said I should contact the seller to settle the cost of the damage as the contract between UPS was with them, not me.
For that they want to take the machine away for 8-10 business days and need to do something called a 'burst test' and 'edge crush test' as I don't know what strength the box is. They've said if this wasn't done prior to being shipped then it's not covered. They're doing everything they can to push blame onto the seller. At this point I've set the machine up, propped up the corner with a small wooden block so it doesn't have a habit of rocking back and forth as I move around and placed it (mostly) under my desk. It just annoys me that they were paid to deliver an item to me and they damaged it (potentially right in front of me) and they are saying that they're not a fault. Oh well, next time I'll just drive and pick it up instead.
I believe this may be the reason why apple decided to change form of mp with 6,1...to make it lighter to carry.

Doing that right now - got 3x16gb DDR3-1333 sticks from DMS. They're running fine as 1066 in 4,1 dual.

That's a FaceTime setting that can be turned off. I don't even have Bluetooth turned on and I was getting cell call notifications on my cMP. (I have an Airport Extreme 802.11n 2nd Generation router)
I don't have a mic hooked up to my cMP, so I disabled that feature in FaceTime prefs.
But we can take those phone calls on our MacBook AIR while the iPhone being called is in another room, never touched through the whole process. Kinda cool actually.

@howiest I'm not complaining about the phone calls coming through, I was just really surprised to see them pop up as I have no airport card and bluetooth 2.1, I thought that I needed AC wireless and Bluetooth 4.0/4.1 for hand-off on my phone. Playing around it seems that it is only iMessages and phone calls that are routed through however, text messaging and hand-off from apps doesn't appear on either device.

@mattspace Thanks, I've ordered myself some more memory, just waiting on it to arrive.

Since I've been getting such excellent answers to all my questions, I thought I'd take advantage of you all yet again and ask if anyone has ever had any experience with the NanoTech 4 port USB3.0 PCIe cards? They seem pretty reasonably priced (~£23) for a card that claims to work with Mac OS X natively.

When I was researching USB 3.0 cards, the main difference is how many controller chips are present to support multiple streams of USB 3.0 data.

Some cards have a single chip set to support multiple USB ports, and the data stream thru the chipset is divided among the ports, so (2) USB 3.0 devices connected to the card could run at half their potential data speed.

Some cards have multiple controller chips so that each USB 3.0 port will run at 5G/s super speeds regardless of how many ports are used.

Both designs can be a good solution depending on what you need. I need to be able to connect multiple USB 3.0 devices without limiting data I/O on any of the ports. That may not be what others need.

The cards with multiple chipsets are more expensive. I have been using the Sonnet Allegro Pro which is more expensive than the card you referenced..

@Bytehoven Thanks, that makes some sense. The only reason I would want USB3.0 (that I can immediately think of) is to load/save quicker to removable media. Currently my USB ports are only used for a keyboard, USB cable for my camera and a USB 3.0 drive for time machine so I don't think I'd ever need 4x 5Gb/s, certainly not for any regular use anyway. For £22 I may have a look at the NanoTech card unless anyone can think of a reason not to.
