I have ordered Kingston HyperX 'Impact' 2 x 8GB capable of 1866MHz @ CL-10-10-10. How will I know if 'it' 'has happened' ? It is not as if there is a pregnancy test for it.

Tim.

Well... you could compare your results with Geekbench. If your memories are running around 17% faster, then Geekbench should perhaps report a faster system, beating most, if not all, 2011 dual-i7 Minis.

how strange,

my 2012 Mac Mini has also 16 gb installed

and my intel HD 4000 shows 1 gb

which OSX do you have ?

another strange thing: I have 1600 Mhz ram installed, but recognized at 1333

yours shows 1600

The HD4000 has used 1024GB of RAM if you have 8GB+ installed since Mavericks I think.

4K Video

I am the happy owner of a mini 2011 i7 2,7 GHZ with the 6630m.

Actually I was surprised to see that 4K videos are being played without any problems... Therefore I started wondering if and how one could upgrade this wonderful beast to manage a 4K display? This seems to be the only drawback vs. the 2014 version at the moment

The 2011 does 4K video's equally well.
The problem is: does your screen handle it?
Movies have to run at 23.976Hz, and the 2011 runs great at 4K/23.976.... At 60Hz the playback judders a lot.
But can your 4K screen handle 23.976Hz input? That's the question! The Mac will do.

Hi, I have a quad core i7 late 2012 Mac Min, upgraded with 16gb memory which reports at 1600mhz, and gives 1024mb to video memory.
Fwiw i bought 2x 8g sticks of Kingston KVR16N11/8 which is 8GB PC3-12800CL11-240pin. Im running Yosemite, I presume it was the same before I upgraded OS.

Is it worth to buy this 2011 macmini model over the 2014 version? Thank you.

There is almost no category in which the 2011 Mini is superior to the 2014 Mini, except that you can get 2011 Minis with quad-core CPUs, and you are able to upgrade the RAM.

Specifically, if you are interested in 4K resolution, the 2011 Mini does not officially support it. The 2014 does, but only at 30 Hz. (There are no Minis that support 4K at 60 Hz.)

The 2011 mini with the 6630m was considered slightly better suited for GPU-heavy tasks (especially gaming) back in its time. The internal GPU in the 2014 should be close, if not slightly better. For gaming neither can be recommended, though. Plus, the 2014 has faster SSD speeds and a better connectivity with 2 instead of only one Thunderbolt port.

If it's about having a quadcore over the 2014 dualcore, the 2012's are better than the 2011's (younger, USB3.0). And the 2012's are easier/better upgradeable in terms of HDD/SSD / upgradeable at all (Ram), when compared to the 2014. Probably cheaper as well when it comes to total costs, as you can max. the Ram and put in an inexpensive standard SSD at any time after purchase.

Not every program makes use of more cores, though, so it really depends on what you want to use the mini for, luanabreu.
