I think the real question I need to ponder is if Apple care is worth it vs. how often I have broken a screen. I did break the screen on my iPhone 8 once, but I also paid 15 dollars a month for insurance for about 3.5 years, so that's $630 bucks in insurance. Pretty expensive actually. Probably more than getting my screen replaced.

I would recommend doing phone insurance plans through the carrier. My friend and I both had broken screens at the same time a few years ago. I had AppleCare that I paid $99 or $150 for upfront (I can’t remember which). The screen replacement was $99.
She had the insurance through Verizon and was paying something like $10-$15 per month, and still had a $200 deductible before they would even look at the phone.

An out of warranty screen replacement on iPhone 12 will be $279

this wasn’t directed to you, just my two sense for anyone else considering AppleCare versus phone insurance :)

If I calculate it out, I have paid 15 per month for insurance for 10 years of smartphones (at least). That's 1800 dollars in insurance. During that time I have broken 2 iPhone screens. Yeah, it definitely hasn't been worth it to get Apple care in my circumstance.

I have insurance with Xfinity, and it is Apple Care.

Yeah I your case I definitely don’t think it was worth it! I think they were also charging you an insane amount for the AppleCare. I’ve had AppleCare on a 5c, 6s, 7s, and XS and the most I’ve ever paid was like $149 for two years of coverage. I think the AppleCare for my IUP for the 12 is $7 a month.

Same. All this time at home, I even took the case off for awhile since I wasn't going anywhere, but the roundness of the Xs Max makes it soap bar slippery. I gave up and put the yellowing clear rubber case back on it. I'd love to go caseless with the new one, I'm looking at bumper style cases to maybe rock the old iPhone 4 "antennagate bumper" look.
I took off the case of my XS Max, but one summer day outdoors it slipped out of my pocket on a two-level stone patio and it now has damage on two corners plus a big crack in the screen. Case went back on while I waited for the new phones. I loved the bumper on my 4s and it would be a great idea for the 12.

If you drop it and it lands on its side, the screen might be okay, but now the side is beat up. AC doesn’t cover that. That kind of stuff bothers me. So I do both.

remember when you geht apple care + and send your phone in for express service that you geht a refurbed iphone.. dont undersand me wrong, your geht a refurbed phone which is testet from apple.
i have it on my iphone 7 and i got 2 times iphones where the screen had micro scratches. i went back to the apple store and they replaced it - but remember, this are not totaly new phones.

I’ve had iPhones since the beginning, so 13 years. I’ve never broken a screen. I have spent $150+ in various cases over the years. I used to do screen protectors, back screen protectors, etc. A lot of this had to do with the fact that I usually sold my old phone on Craigslist each year so I wanted it as pristine as possible for selling. Since the iUP, Apple doesn’t really care what condition you return the phone in. I don’t have to deal with the hassle of selling it. And since the design changes every year, I don’t bother buying a $40 case, and just go naked. I was partial to the Apple leather cases over the years though.

I took off my case to prepare for the new iPhone 12, and lo and behold it had slipped out of my hands luckily a carpeted area. Not me folks, I will put on a case and a screen protector.

Anyone know the damage threshold on IUP trade-ins?
i’m not 100% positive so if other people have experience feel free to correct me.
My understanding is that, since it includes applecare, if it’s something that AppleCare would cover, then you’ll be fine. They’ll just charge you the deductible.

I used to just go with films on front and back for scratch protection, as I’m careful about not dropping my phone. But now I have a toddler who is quite a bit less careful, so it’s a case for me. 😂

I did a full body film when I had my iPhone 4S. I loved the naked look at the scratch protection. It did survive quite well with the film for the couple of times I dropped it. No scratches or dents. I was thinking about doing a full body film protection for the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Rhino Shield makes a front and back impact film but nothing for the sides. I would love to have the "naked" look of the film but I don't think it will work for me this time.

I remember when I first got my iPhone 6S+. I hadn't received my case for it yet. I opened the box it came in to marvel at and it slipped out of my hand and on to a hard tile floor. Man was I bummed.

Most cases offer no guarantee against breaking your phone. I haven’t used a case in years. I don’t remember what model it was, but I’ve broken 1 screen cost me $100 to fix. Now even the backs cost 499 or something stupid.

Extended warranties almost never pay for themselves.

I’m not giving advice, results vary.

The new iPhone 12/Pro screens cost $279, the Pro Max cost $329 to replace. If you are careful then maybe AppleCare is not worth it. I do agree that everyone has to evaluate whether AppleCare is worth it to them. I tend to think of AppleCare as piece of mind, it's there if you need it because life happens.

No guarantee? No, but cases like Otterbox offer amazing protection against damage when you drop your phone. Even on tile floors and asphalt. (Speaking from experience here.) As clumsy and distracted as I am, a case with drop protection is the first investment I can make to protect my phone. AppleCare then protects my peace of mind in case of damage.

I think you also have to factor in lifestyle. Some people are more active so we might drop our phones more.

What you do for a living also plays a part.. If you are a desk jockey who hates the sun, your phone will almost always be safe, as long as you aren't a klutz. If you are a risk taker, active, whatever it doesn't hurt to have. Between back glass, front glass, and a battery, if you time it right it could pay for itself. I will usually bring my phone in before AC expires and get them to work on it, so I have a new phone to retire lol. Whatever.. like they said.. you paid for it.

I've never put a phone in a case. I have broken a few screens, but just get AC+ to limit the damage. In the early days I would obsess about keeping my phone pristine, but now I just use it, and if the screen isn't cracked it's perfect to me.
