My mom currently has the XR and occasionally has problems with it. She is wanting a new phone, but doesn't want to spend too much either. The iPhone 11 seems to fit the bill ($300 after trade in). She wants the same size screen and Face ID, so the SE is out of the question. She is aware that the 11 isn't much of an upgrade from the XR and is okay with that. She doesn't care to have the latest bells and whistles.

The new rumored SE seems to be a similar form factor as the current one, so I'm not sure if it's worth waiting for the event on the 8th. Would the lineup be changing at all? Could the 11 be going away, and the cost of the 12 will be lowered to $500? Would it be typical of Apple to continue selling the 11/A13 when the rumored SE will have the latest A15 chip?

I'm home right now and could help her order it, otherwise we'd be waiting another week or two. I just don't want to miss the opportunity of potentially being able to get the 12 for a lower cost, but also don't want to miss out on the 11 if it happens to go away and the cost of the 12 isn't lowered to the $500 price point (since she doesn't want the lower cost SE). Thoughts?

Apple discontinued the iPhone 8 and 8+ when they announced the SE 2020. So it is possible they could drop the 11 from the regular lineup when the SE5G (or whatever it will be called) is announced. That said, there are certainly going to be IP 11 models available by resellers. If you are in the US, you can also order an 11 or 11 pro refurbished at the apple store and save some money. Is there an apple store near her home? They can make the process pretty painless in person.

Some people are sensible to it. Most of us aren't. But that doesn't mean that the issue isn't there, and is a showstopper for those that can perceive it.

SE3 launch will have no effect on iPhone 11.

The XR was sold in the Apple Store for 3 years. The same thing will happen with the 11 because it continues to be a money maker.

You’re more likely to see refurb iPhone 12 in the U.S. store in the next few weeks.

Which carrier is she on? If it’s ATT the iPhone 13 is free over 3 years if you trade in the XR.

I’d honestly go iPhone 12 due to being newer and having 5G connectivity. The 11 is essentially a XR with a extra camera

I have the iPhone 11, it still runs as fast as the newer models. I have issue with the oled screen flickering (from iPhone XS).

In your case, if your mom needs a phone now, she needs a phone now. Since she doesn't care to have the latest bells and whistles, just get the 11 now so she's no longer worrying about not having a usable phone.

It is predicted that Apple will discontinue the 11 when they announce the 14. With the SE getting a 5G treatment, I think Apple want their whole lineup to be all 5G capable by the end of this year.

My mother was desperately in the need of a new phone. Her iPhone 7 was showing "no signal" more often, and the carrier said everything was good on their end and even replaced the SIM card. I intended to get her the SE2, as the carrier had a good deal on one, but she wanted a bigger phone with a better camera. We looked at the 11, and she fell in love with it. It completely fits her needs. She's 100% happy with it and doesn't care about bells and whistles.

Try and wait until the event tomorrow, Apple could surprise and actually release the SE Plus based on the 8+ design. Would make more sense in terms of battery capacity for 5G.

My wife and I got the 11 Pro Max last year (coming from the Pixel 3a XL). One of the reasons was we don't need 5G. Currently, all the US carriers are rolling out 5G. We went through the LTE rollout on Sprint and don't care to be part of dropped calls, call failures, no data and slow data all over again. LTE networks are well established now, just like 3G networks were when LTE rolled out.

We'll wait for that to be the case with 5G.

can't say I've noticed that on mine.

I have the 11 Pro Max, which is also OLED. Haven't noticed any flickering either.
The technology with OLED basically means that the brightness is controlled via switching on and off the screen many, many times per second. So called PWM. Faster switching = brighter screen. Slower switching = darker screen. You can't perceive this conciously, but some people's brains notice it, and they can get a headache or other such symtoms. Read more here. LCD doesn't work that way, the screen is always lit. The iPhone 11 has an LCD screen.

The iPhone 11 does indeed have an LCD. The 11 Pro Max (which I have) is OLED.

But yeah, apparently my brain is unable to perceive this switching. Before the 11PM, I was using the Pixel 3a XL, which is also OLED and I noticed nothing.

Thanks for the link.

I think it’s much like phosphor trails with plasma screens and rainbows with DLP projectors. Some see it and some don’t. For what it’s worth I can see both of the aforementioned phenomenon but don’t see OLED flickering ?‍♂️

I have an 11 Pro and it's still a gem of a phone. I'd just roll with the 11, there is nothing in the 12/13 to justify an upgrade. I've ran speedtests on my phone and my wife's (she has a 12), and I have yet to see a significant performance boost to 5G from LTE. Besides, do you really need more than 200 mbps on a phone?? LOL.

I 100% agree with all that you’ve said. I’m with Verizon and 5G, in my area, doesn’t exist and probably won’t for a while. Personally, LTE is plenty fast and plenty stable for what it offers. That being said, I don’t know if this is related or not, but I have noticed that LTE coverage and signal strength has gotten worse in areas where it used to be better. Either way, I’ll keep 5G disabled in favor of stability. I went through the Sprint LTE roll out, too. That was a mess.
