I say go for it. I don't know about warranty though. Warranty service may need to go through Japan. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Apple have previously been happy to do warranty work for a product bought abroad when I took it into a store. They confirmed the problem and swapped out

In that case they are probably honouring the 1 year warranty which is likely international.

Do u know whether the AppleCare purchased in the country that I am residing in will be valid if the Mac mini was purchased abroad?

It's an interesting question.

But after hunting online for an answer, it's become clear to me that the answer depends on where you live.

For various reasons, Apple doesn't sell the same optional warranty products in every country where it sells hardware. Different countries/regions get different products. And to confuse matters, customers often refer to all of the various products as "AppleCare" as though there's only one specific product being sold worldwide.

You haven't said where you live, but wherever it is, you should ask your local Apple store for a possibly more reliable answer.

Please be aware that when returning to your home country you shall have to declare it to Customs and pay taxes.
So the savings won't be $200 for sure.

I highly doubt that you will have to pay taxes on electronics purchased abroad, they don't even check your luggage anymore unless a scan shows something illegal.
It depends on his country of residence but most certainly he will have to pay, as the purchase is tax free in Japan for foreigners.
