iv been looking in to doing a cpu swap (got to get a 4.1/5.1 first tho :p) and fond this page showing different ways to put the paist on and changes in temp
https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Thermal-Paste-Application-Techniques-170/

looks like there's not a lot in it  GL

As you can see, the difference is just 1-2 degrees. TBH, that's nothing for non-extremes OC computer user.

And the worst 4 result all have the "red area", air bubble virtually means nothing. But all result are roughly the same. Even the thin line method, the paste can't even cover half of the CPU. It can still deliver better result than another 2 methods.

Smooth spread has lots of bubble, but is the 2nd best.

My own conclusion is pick the right paste, choose a method that you want. Do that method properly. As long as the amount is right, the thickness is right, then the temperature should be good (may not be the best).

Right paste not necessary means the best, but the correct one which fit your needs. E.g. Non electrically conductive , non corrosive to the heat sink, or easy to apply etc.

Looking good so far. Now give it four movies to encode simultaneously in Handbrake, watch the temps and report. :)

sweet :D thats one sparky score

still not got around to ordering a cpu yet, was it hard to install?
which past did you get,

cinbench run a bunch of times in a row is a good way to see how hot they get or like o.n.y.x mentioned handbrake can be good to
i stuck one video in to handbrake, chose HQ preset then queued it up a bunch of times so it keeps ruining for a while (as you'll burn that video like nobody)

Nice scores but for folks on a budget I went 'cheap' and used 2 4 core x5677s, 3.46. In a 2009 8 core, orig. at 2.66.
https://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/2892373

For some reason they are priced like the ugly step child and on eBay they can be had for $60-$80 a piece. I used the savings for a couple msata drives and boosted the transfer speed of my boot/apps location to over 700 gb/s (in raid0).

Going cheap is the better choice for most scenarios. I'm even thinking about switching to a pair of 5677s from 5690s just for the sake of lower temperatures. As of now Logic Pro X (the only app I'm using on the Mac Pro) supports but doesn't need 12 cores. And in summer the 5690s get hot, hot, hot.

Yeah I weighed the 5690s but the prices on eBay couldn't touch the x5677s and after reviewing my budget and the apps that I primarily use I was willing to sacrifice the reduced cores and invest a portion of the difference into I/O improvements - msata setup.

when you say regular mode do you mean bootcamp or just windows and install?

Last time i installed windows 7 I,
-pulled all HD's apart from the one i wanted windows 7 on out of my mac pro
-booted from the windows 7 installer on dvd, usb works too)
-formatted the drive in the windows installer
-installed windows 7
-I had grabbed the bootcamp drivers and stuck them on a usb stick, after instaling & booting in to windows i installed them
-got the newer graphics driver from nvidia's site
-did windws auto update

once windows was up to date i shut down and put back in all my HD's, then rebooted & good to go.

but that might not be what you want, i like to have a dedicated windows drive that i can pull if i want to (at the mo it's on a shelf, if i ever want it i can just put it back in).
and that was with a PC GTX 660 card

I just did Windows 10 with a GTX980 recently using Boot Camp Assistant. Didn't need anything exotic, it just worked.

since my gtx 970 has no efi, and im trying via 'regular'/normal modes, yes.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but AFAIK boot screens are required for installing Windows. You can run a no-EFI video card after installing Windows.

tks! After a smc reset i got it! The problem was with the bootcamp restart. I had tu disable it and manually restart.

Worked with the 980... Windows have capabilities to start without efi..
