I just got my first Mac, a 20" iMac, yesterday. I had some of the same worries as you a month or so ago, what with the "video freeze" problems of a certain percentage of aluminum iMacs when they first came out.

However, that's been resolved by a firmware fix, so don't let that scare you. And if you, by some freaky nature, get one with stuck pixels or other problems, take it back and get it repaired or replaced. Since your Apple Store happens to be near your home, this make it easy.

Loyalty to Windows isn't really a problem, either. I'm planning to activate Bootcamp on mine, in order to use a Windows-only pro audio application. Otherwise, the Mac will do what you want it to, and more, in a more intuitive way than Windows ever could.

Seriously, it was by far the most trouble-free setup of any computer I or any of my family/friends have ever purchased. It even automatically detected my Wi-Fi and, after a quick entering of my password, off it went.

Long story short: Go. Buy. And don't bother looking back.

I was going to start a new thread until I spotted this.

I LOVE my new iMac! Setting up and ready to go is the fastest I've ever seen, and I'm on my fourth generation of Macs now. It was a bit spooky that it wanted to take my photo in the set-up process, but I soon found out how to delete that afterwards.

It's so FAST! I now have two Macs on the go at work just for me - the old G4 on one desk and the new iMac on another one. I spend 90% of my work-time on the new one because it's so fast and intuitive........having said that though, it's taken me a few days to get the hang of "things aren't where I expected them to be....." but the learning curve is speeding up. (Post-it notes all over the stainless steel thin monitor)

The first thing I did was to dump the keyboard. And plug in another full-sized USB keyboard I had in reserve. The designed keyboard sucks in my opinion, but it's a small issue considering how great it is otherwise. There's no fan, so it's completely silent! By GOD it boots up fast!

I just got my first Mac a month ago and LOVE it. I just traded my 20" for a 24" yesterday and I'm even MORE in love. I'd highly suggest a 24". WOW!

We have been using our new 20" iMac for three weeks now. I have zero dead pixels and the screen looks great. We happen to think the new keyboard is very comfortable to work with. We are very happy with our first Mac. MC

IIRC, you need to have 5 dodgy pixels before Apple will accept a return with no questions asked (but I could be wrong about this). I suspect if you had less and made enough fuss, Apple would swap it.

But then again, I wouldn't worry too much. My 20" Al-iMac has one stuck (red) pixel towards the centre of the screen. That's 1 pixel out of 1,764,000. I literally have to strain my eyes trying to spot it. With a few specks of dust on my screen it's invisible.

I took the plunge four years ago buying an ibook and it still is used at full throttle like you would use a new machine.
After that I purchased a mac mini the first month it was launched.
Go ahead and purchase it. You will save a lot of money in the long term as macs last a long time. My ibook could go on for another couple of years at least.

Just finished unboxing.... No Leopard Preinstalled I upgraded... took a long time.

Good News: No bad pixels, and no freezing so far.... (I played with her for a couple of hours)

What I miss from Windows so far:

My DVD Rip Program --> Im sure there is something free for Mac around
My Adobe PDF (I was Scanning some documents on PDF)
the Right click --> Is there any right click function on this thing? LOL

Dont know where to start.... Maybe ITunes and my music collection...

THis machine and this OS have a fresh Feel to it that I like... Machine is quiet and transitions between programs is very smooth... I tried vista Before, but look too clumsy, went back to XP...

For now I am very happy wetting my feet in the shallow waters of this OS. I am getting ready now to get into the deep stuff....

In the mean time I will keep my trusty and beautiful VAIO 11"... Mac please get us a ultraportable and I will be sold!!!

FWIW:

Just about all the freezing problems people have been reporting with the newer iMacs seem to have been taken care of with the last firmware update.

I'm on my 2nd 24" iMac, the first was returned due to the left side-right side brightness and color gradient. The newer one has a uniform screen and is otherwise as flawless as the first.

Dead pixels seem to be rare, at least my luck is holding out. 1 Dual USB iBook, 1 studio LCD monitor, G4 iMac, G5 iMac, 2x 24" iMacs and one iPod Touch and not one of them has had dead pixels.

The only issues I have had were Leopard-related and involved migrating over my old accounts from Tiger. If you are starting off fresh, you should have no issues there.

Anyhow, welcome to the Mac family.

OSX supports any three button, scroll wheel mouse and has since 10.0. If the mighty mouse came with your machine go to preferences to enable it.

1. DVD Rip Program: Though I've never used it, Handbrake is supposed to be the program for this.

2. Adobe PDF? Do you mean Acrobat Reader or Writer? The built-in "Preview" app will display PDFs; you can download Acrobat Reader from the web; and you can purchase Acrobat Professional for Mac.

3. Right Click is available on the Mighty Mouse that came with your iMac. By default it may not be turned on. Just go to the Mouse Preferences panel and configure the right-click button.

Handbrake won't rip DVD's. It'll convert a ripped DVD to another format.

The user is looking for MacTheRipper. Just be aware it doesn't handle all copy protection schemes on DVD's right now.

Im a new mac owner as of about 2weeks ago and ive noticed that my screen has a color gradient problem,words and colors are washed out looking on the bottom of the screen and gets better at the top. My question is how easy is it to take my imac back to an apple store and exchange for a 24" instead?

Handbrake won't rip DVD's. It'll convert a ripped DVD to another format.

It'll rip directly off a DVD and convert directly into any type of video file format under the sun. I used it to make 700 MB avi files directly from the DVD in the drive all in one step.

"Handbrake is a DVD to MPEG-4 ripper/converter."

gratz on your first mac and i'm sure you will love the OSX and for the pdf OSX has built in PDF creator try print and dialog comes up has a a button at the bottom far left corner try selecting save as pdf (it works in any application)

GUYS THANK YOU..... I have been playing with this sweet machine for over 3 days now... No Freezing, no Dead Pixels, no sound at all... Mac OS is very intuitive, I was using Itunes in Windows, so I was used to the features there and there is a great similarity with the Browser....

Now in regards to the PDF issues... What I need is to scan hard copy documents and Convert them to PDF.... In my previous windows machine I had the full ADOBE acrobat version, so I just selected import-->From Fax and the document was scanned and presented as a pdf, that i was able to manipulate, crop, change the order of pages etc...

How can I do this in this computer?

EDIT= NO COLOR GRADIENT HERE! sorry for the caps.... I am no photographer or anything like that, this screen is just as good as any i have had before...
