These taxes are what give comfortable countries to live in, with services, benefits, and everything.

God I hope youre not serious. If theres anything I always hear people rave about, its the government services and benefits they receive.
Hell, lets make our countries/states TWICE as nice to live in. I say DOUBLE the sales tax! WooHoo!!!

I agree, who cares if we don't have any money to spend. It wont matter because the Government will use our tax money and take care of us for ever!!! Wheeee!

Pay no attention, powerbook911... This is coming from someone who lives in the state of 'unfunded mandate'. (I kid, MRSkeptic, I KID!)

Yeah, I can see how a Californian would be pessimistic about taxes. You guys pay through the nose, and don't get much in return. Although I do find it funny that the Californian electorate (I'm speaking in the general, since from your post, it looks like you disagree with the rest of Californians,) votes to approve huge spending bills, while voting against tax increases. I mean, really. How can you pay for $6 billion in stem-cell research when your government is already broke?

Here in Oregon, (well, more specifically Portland,) we actually do see where our tax money goes. Yes, lots of it is boondoggle special interest projects (a new tram that is now looking like it's going to go over budget yet again, ($500 mil, when the initial budget estimate was $150 mil, and it looks like the original contractors knew it wasn't going to be anywhere near that cheap,) whose sole useful purpose is to ferry employees of one single company around, yet that company says it should be a public project,) but at least we can see where it's going.

Most online tools calculate sales tax based on shipping address - you know, if you really wanted to get around paying state sales tax alltogether, have your new MBP shipped to a friend in either New Hampshire or Oregon. They can then ship it to you from there (though how much this might save once you've paid for shipping and insurance is debatible), or you can pick it up from them on your next visit.

like somebody said before.. .buy it from amazon or another website because Apple is requred by law to charge you sales tax whenever they have an office in your state. Too bad the Apple Stores around me are on the good ol' Los Angeles 8.25% tax rate (which might go up by .25%)... But were just paying for the sun. and to all of you people complaining that were not seeing it lately... where else can you drive a convertible with the top down for at least 320 days out of the year??

Hey, you can do that in Portland!

if you waterproof the interior of the car, that is.

Hey, would that qualify me to drive in the carpool lane?
