I believe one of the issues with apps that only front-end iCloud calendars is notifications. I use Weekview (bought years ago and ignore the nags to subscribe) and the free version of Calendars (will purchase if I continue to like it) and neither can handle event notifications. They'll always come from the stock calendar app and clicking on one opens Apple Calendar.

I don't mind this, as even if one hosts their calendars with e.g. Fantastical, the notifications won't work if you don't have a signal or are in airplane mode.

I also have that with the WeekCal app that my wife and I are using for years (every since Apple changed the layout of Apple Calendar) and with that one we also don't have a subscription (just bought once) and the notifications are only coming from Apple's calendar since this also synchronizes with our Google calendars that we use within this WeekCal app.

Since this thread has come back from the dead...

Have switched to Calendar 366 on my iPhone. The developer has cleaned up a bunch of UI issues I had with it. Sure, probably not as polished as some other apps out there, but is getting the job done for me on iPhone (heavy lifting generally done on Mac).

Still hanging onto Fantastical on Mac and iPad, until Flexibits pulls some stunt trying to force a subscription, or need to do a clean install on iPad (which I believe will cause all v2 features to disappear). For iPad, it's there just out of curiosity to see what the subscription buys you re: improvements they MIGHT push down the road.

Calendars 5 for me. Readdle have been smashing it with their apps recently
Readdle year view available on iPad installations but not on iPhone installations. Makes no sense. Now that F3 has iPhone year view, you'd think Readdle would want to keep pace. Readdle year view decent. I'd love to have it on iPhone!

My requirement for any replacement is that it includes Reminders and Calendar sync, including Google Calendars only because it is so ubiquitous and "free" (I avoid M$ as much as possible, the original evil empire).

I love BusyCal on my Mac, but the iOS version seems like the forgotten sister. Updates and "new" features are released at a glacially slow pace for the iOS app.

I was on the fence a lot as $40 a year is kinda ridiculous. But I can't really find a replacement that works as well for Imac, ipad and Iphone. I was able to get a 20% academic discount for two years. Still kinda too expensive but... :(
