Nothing in your rant against huge, expensive iPhones justifies buying a Windows PC. The introduction price for the iPhone SE was $399 for a measly 16GB version and $499 for 64GB. That’s not too far from the $749 iPhone XR with 64GB and a much more modern design. I dislike huge phones as much as anyone, but there is a reason the market is moving in that direction. You can’t blame Apple for the preference of the vast majority of customers for bigger screens with smaller bezels.

I like big screens and I can not lie ...

lol in what way was he ranting or blaming apple? he is just said that he is disappointed with apple's direction and that he might have to consider other brands. everyone has different needs and is entitled to their opinions.

I think you're missing the point.

I think you're overreacting.

I can understand being frustrated with the form factor you prefer being phased out. But basing what kind of computer you buy around what Apple is doing with smartphones just seems silly. If you think Microsoft isn't making the same market based calculations (go read some Microsoft-tilted blogs to see how many there worry that the consumer market is ultimately completely phased out by MS) then you are kidding yourself.

I was also disappointed Apple have discontinued the SE. So, yesterday I went and upgraded my iPhone 7 to an SE (thanks Apple for killing what battery life my phone had with another software update) and also bought a Samsung Note 9. My sim for calls will stay in the SE as it fits in my pocket, the Note 9 is the upgrade to my iPad Mini with a pencil that I got tired of waiting for, I'll get a data sim for it. So far I've got to say im pleasantly surprised how nice Android is to use.

I don't understand the problem with typing on a large or small iPhone. I use Siri to dictate, and not the keyboard, as often as I can remember to do it. Siri has become 99.99% reliable for me. No matter what App I am in. I keep trying to get my wife too use her. She is a very slow typer. I can fall asleep watching the 3 dots on iMessages until she finishes and sends--

I guess people find different things useful. I tried siri back when it was launched, wasn't impressed by it so switched it off. TBH I would find it inhibiting to talk to my phone, particularly a message to my other half, also no one should have to listen to that. I suppose it depends where you are though, sending a quick message to say "pick up milk" is a lot easier and less annoying for others than yelling at my phone to "text *** to pick up milk!".

Don't use Siri in public. But, although not as slow as my wife, still not an 80 words a minute typer. Arthritis doesn't help. Just much quicker for me and very error free. :)

I totally get the accessibility usefulness of Siri. For people with sight or mobility issues it'll be invaluable.

I hope its improved from my single time of using it where I tried in vain to ask siri to "remind me to send this Christmas card tomorrow" some three weeks before Christmas and it promptly set the reminder for December the 25th. I realised that if I had to double check for silliness like that I'd be better off typing anyway.

I agree its difficult to type, but it fits in my pocket and, believe or not, I tend to use it as a phone.
I do agree here. I use my phone more as a phone than a texting device.
For me there is a lot of communication lost over text and email so I will tend to just talk and handle what needs handling so I can move on to something else.

Now I did go to the Plus sized phones but am back to the smaller Xs and enjoying the smaller size much more than the plus/max.

I was holding out hope for another small phone. 15 minutes after Tim and company announced the newest giant phones, I activated my new SE. I should be OK for a while.

In all fairness that's excluding all of the overhead, including R&D (which apple spends billions) marketing retooling and what not. Its not as simple as adding up the cost of the parts list.
Yes. Agree. The $250 estimated costs (my best guess) doesn’t include the marketing, research etc.

However. The real Apple strategy is they know consumers are keeping phones longer. So they want to sell at even higher prices. And selling a smaller screen size phone means likely selling it for cheaper. And Apple doesn’t want to go the budget route right now.

This made me curious, so I tried your Christmas card reminder. Siri promptly set a reminder for tomorrow at 9:00 am. Of course, my grandson and I today kept asking her how to play tri-ominos and she kept hearing "try on my nose," which my grandson found hilarious.

No one in America uses WhatsApp because we all have affordable data.

maybe no one you know does but for people who travel or who has friends/family overseas we use it daily. also its nothing to do with data. it's because texting has always been cheaper for us than in other countries. they use WhatsApp because it runs on data which for whatever reason is inexpensive compared to text messaging rates.

They must have updated it, to be fair I did try it quite a few years ago. I just need her felt the need to give it another go.

Glad it works better now.

I may be old, but I'm not stupid. I'm an Apple fan and use a 27" iMac, a MacBook and an iPad Mini. I've been using an iPhone 4s since it was released and the ONLY reason I was wanting to "upgrade" was so I'd be able to use a current IOS, which presumably will be more secure than IOS 9. Apple's latest iPhones are far too big, so I've bought an iPhone SE from a 3rd party supplier at a heavily discounted price. I'm happy with this, but disappointed that Apple has abandoned a significant minority - just as they did when they abandoned Aperture. My next iMac might be a PC.
If it makes you happy, stick with the se

Make sure you use a PC for a few days before committing to buy. I always get surprised at how bad windows are compared to macOS when I have to use them.

I have a couple of radios that require windows programs for maintenance. I despise having to use my Windows laptop.

Why would anyone wants a tiny phone anymore? I gave my 10yo son an SE last year, it's too small now even for him.

Different people have different preferences? Fairly simple and straightforward.
