It seems I am stuck. Call of Duty 4 is coming out for the Mac (supposedly this May) soon. Should I buy the Mac version or the PC version? I am not sure, and I wanted a couple of people's opinions on what I should do.

Oh yeah, I use Boot Camp to play games.

Can you play online with the Mac version? Against PC people? IMO the online game play of CoD is what makes the game so good.

I'd go for PC if its an option for you simply to avoid any lag in getting the update patches that get released. With previous CoD games there has been a huge delay for the Mac release of a patch meaning that you can't play on the same servers as PC users who have installed the patch.

I'd go for the PC version purely based on its performance. I wouldn't be too happy needlessly dropping the quality of graphics.

I can't accept rebooting, personally, but wait and see tests/reviews - or better yet a demo - of the Mac version if you can't decide. Then you'll know better if it performs well on your Mac in OS X.

I'm not understanding some of the replies up here.
If you have both systems installed on the same machine you should get the same performance. I don't think that playing COD4 on my iMac in Windows made the game faster, since I use the same graphic card that I use in Leopard.

Bas.

Actually, performance is affected by BOTH hardware and software, which is why a patch or new driver can make a game get faster sometimes. Software includes the OS, the GPU drivers, and the game itself, and how the game interacts with the OS and GPU. Plus other processes that may be running in the background can have an effect.

Windows and OS X do things very differently--with OS X being arguable the more powerful and modern design (putting tools like Core Animation into the hands of devs and users). But a game designed and optimized for Windows, then ported to Mac, WILL often (but not always) see some performance slowdown as a result.

Your own experience bears out that the slowdown may not even be noticed. But some will notice. And some who don't notice will see benchmarks on a web page and care anyway ;)

I certainly do care, if I notice I have to lower my detail to achieve a good speed on mid-range or lower-end hardware (I seldom buy the top end). But not enough to buy, reboot for, maintain, secure or otherwise deal with Windows :)

Buying the Mac version will help support game development on Apple products... :)
Apple needs to get involved a little bit more with these companys with help or funds because in the end it pushes the whole companys bottom line plus Apple has billions in the bank. I think with the iMac line and its great selection of Gpu's Apple can get back into this game of gaming.
The more of us buying Mac games the more Mac games there will be. ETQW will just have to do for now:)

This is one of the primary reasons I might go for the mac version.

Like nagromme said though, I'm gonna wait for reviews.

If you have a high end system like a new mac pro, then you'll probably be able to run with relatively high settings even if the performance on the mac version isn't as good as the PC version.

But for someone like me, with a first gen iMac, I'll probably have to run the game at lowest settings to get a decent framerate with the mac version : \

Yeah. Those ba*tards over at Aspyr have now updated their website to say "Summer 2008" instead of May 2008.

And we all know that gives them until August 30th, and I have no doubt it'll take them that long to do it. Couple that with the fact that there will probably have been several patches for the game on the Windows side by then which will limit the Mac player's multi-player experience.

I think I'm just going to give up and buy the PC version. I'm tired of waiting.

This is why gaming on the Mac will always suck. Developers just don't care.

Yeah, since they pushed it back, I'm just going to go ahead and purchase the PC version.

I am not sure if the Mac CoD4's online would aim towards only Macs or both PC and Macs. I don't feel the need to wait that long for a game I should have purchased a long time ago.

I'd really like to support mac development but sometimes they make it so hard : \

Another aspect is the cost difference. By the time the mac version comes out, you can usually get the PC version for a significantly cheaper price. That's ESPECIALLY true of single player games, because it's easy to find used single player PC games - they're everywhere.

Oh, and btw, Steam has a special discount on COD4 this weekend. $10 off (so $40 total).

Well I have been playing since its release on Vista64. I have ordered the mac version as to be honest all the talk about performance is a sidetrack issue imho. It will play fine and I want to use the mac version (as long as I can play on our clans server with it). If it has online connectivity issues then Ill remain with the bootcamp Vista (its the only app I use vista for anyways).

I for one always suggest getting the native version as stated above it aids the push for more native apps. I would love to see mac go for a big push in online gaming to be honest as the OS is far more robust (and there isnt the usual problem of 'getting it to work properly on my hardware' - that the PC fanboys have to put up with, with their differing configurations).

Id say get both if you are worried, but I am sure it will perform fine on OSX.

[OMG]Bunny (www.omg-clan.co.uk/forum is my clans pages if anyone wants to drop by our S&D Modded server (where I am to be found most evenings))

I have cod 4 on my windows vista partition on my mac using bootcamp, I would say its a good midway. No Lag (ofcourse also depending on your internet speed) however, if your a Just4fun gamer play it on your mac. but if your a real gamer play it on pc. hardware is probably better compatible. tip dont use bluetooth mouse and keyboard for gaming!! can ben really annoying somtimes you dont have to pay the extra cash because its mac.

Just get the PC version and play it through bootcamp. The Mac version has unfortunately been delayed simply too long.

ya i completely agree, mac games are too few and far between. besides in windows you can overclock gpu so that's a plus.

VERDICT: run it under boot camp

For YOU it will peform fine. You have a mac pro.

I have a first gen intel iMac that will probably barely meet the minimum specs.

As luck? would have it, the old Windows XP PC in my den just sort of "gave out." Up till then I have been gaming on my MBP and just waiting and waiting on new game releases to become available, including COD4. My frustrations ended with the purchase of a "cheap" PC which I dropped a fairly good video card into. Now all of the PC games I have been wanting to play and which may or may not ever make it to the Mac are available to me. I love my MBP and it is the best computer I have ever owned, but this "solution" worked best for me. COD4 runs great and F.E.A.R is up next!!
