There is a new app in Cydia called Call Tell....it's for the 3GS and the iP4. It reads your text messages to you and tells you who is calling (whether it reads the name from your contact list or just reads out the 10 digit number I don't know)

Just wondering if anyone has tried this app yet? And if so, what's it like?

I just checked CYDIA and am not seeing this app.

I was looking at that yesterday and also wondering how well it works. It could get you in trouble with your girlfriend or wife if you are not careful though.

I am using it, it works nice in it's latest update (1.1 I think), the only thing is that you can't change the language from English unless you know how to edit dylibs. If you have it active for txt's then you can also choose for it to tell you the name of the person or the phone number if not in your contacts and even read you the txt itself. When someone calls you it tells you the name or the phone number then it starts your ringtone... I am liking it so far....The app uses the voice control from the OS to work...

Got it this afternoon. Works great for calls! It just announces "Call from ... [whoever]" just before it rings. Recommend it.
However I haven't been able to get the speak sms function working. Has anyone managed to get this working?

It has a issue with bitesms or lockinfo,

I emailed the dev
Currently CallTell isn't compatible with thirdparty SMS apps, but I am working on that. And as for volume, it reads media player (iPod) volume, so please turn that up.
Thanks,
-Tyler C.

I tried it! Seems nice but when I try to decline the call while it announces the name/number my springboard crashed! This is unacceptable for me so I removed it!

Mine still anounces caller when in silent mode. Unistalled already. Luckily i tested would have been in a meeting today anouncing to everyone who just called. LOL Great concept, maybe a later version after bugs are worked out.

Yikes, was just thinking about that after reading that it uses media player volume.

MAJOR oversight.

i like it. ive had it a day now. i only use it when i set my phone down and im doing something else nearby and i can just listen to what was sent to me

cons:
-doesnt work with bitesms 5.0
-volume is controlled through media player so even if on vibrate, it will still talk
-getting that naughty text from the girlfriend loses its hotness when hearing it from a robotic voice
-no sbsettings toggle

besides that, i find it pretty nice to have. especially when i get texts that arent worth checking

For those who have used it already.....

Will it work through a bluetooth headset....a stereo headset like a Blueant Q1??

Will it work with an older version of BiteSMS or it doesn't work at all with 3rd party SMS apps??

Thanks!

I've been using it with a Jabra BT3030 and it works just fine with BT.
I've had a couple of springboard crashes which didn't happen before i put it on and so I'm still monitoring it.

how do you decide when to use it? do you shut off the media player vol until you decide to use it?

You might want to check out AutoRingtone, if you don't mind my commercial message! (PRO is only $0.99 and we have several FREE versions)

AutoRingtone lets you create Text-To-Speech Talking CallerID ringtones that you assign to your contacts. There's no jailbreaking required and ringtones obey the volume/vibrate settings. You can also use ~200 sound effects as an introduction to play before the message is spoken, in dozens of commercially licensed TTS voices.

the point of this is that it automatically does this without having to sit around and set rings for contacts. I have upwards of 400 contacts - and not nearly enough time to do that. (not to mention the added bonus of autoreading messages too)

I think it would be a lot easier to turn off the feature in the settings (or using an sbsettings toggle if one exists), This way you wouldn't have to go into your ipod to turn the volume up and down all the time.

I had calltell on my IP4 when I was on version 4.3.3 and the speaking voice was female, now like many others I have now upgraded to 5.0.1 but now the voice when calltell is installed in an American male totally mispronouncing my contact names, how would I go about getting the female voice again? as it is the same version app calltell V3.0 I had installed previously.

Admit I downloaded a Pirate version only to try uninstalled it! it's worth the $2 and I'm getting it. I was just a little unsure how well it would work. Just too have it tell me who's calling while the phone is in my pocket is worth the $2 another thing Apple should have thought of!

Do you have male/female voice m8? I've got Daniel who who is a US voice but I preferred the female voice which I had before but can't seem to get it back on my device for some reason.

Why would you pay for an app for your iPhone to read text messages when its already built in the settings, you just need to turn it on? Infact the built in one will read text from anywhere such as Safari.

Where is this setting on the Iphone and does it work in the same way by reading out incoming text and saying who it is from and reading out notification alerts and incoming calls?
