I use a 13” M4 iPad for most things, but just got the Mini 7 for mostly reading. I spend hours a day reading, and while the iPhone Pro Max is good for that, it’s just a little small for extended sessions. The M4 is fine for that but sometimes I wanted something right in between and the Mini just hits that sweet spot for me.

It’s pretty much a Goldilocks form factor. And yes, I’d like a ProMotion display, but it’s not that big a deal
My scenario.

I also switched from the 12.9" M2 Pro, to the 11" M4 Pro, to the Mini 7. I found the Mini to be a better fit for what I primarily use the iPad for: reading books, note taking, and language learning on the go. I found the larger iPads to be too heavy, and the additional power of the M4 to be wasted on iPad OS. I do miss the OLED screen on the M4.

Apple wouldn't let me trade in the M4 so I'm trying to find a place to sell it now.
I think I'm looking to go Mini 7 to 11" M4 Pro. I'm not sure why I can't seem to read on the Mini without getting a headache.

Like you, I'm also looking for a place to sell the Mini 7 since I'm guessing certain devices are too new for trade in

I’ve recently just gone from an m1 11 pro to a mini 7 and have to say I’m happy I did.

The weight and size suit me better for what I use it for however the only thing I do really miss is the 120hz.

Why do Apple seem think only “pro’s” need/want pro motion?

agree, also why does pro have to be attached to everything with a nicer screen and speakers too, doesn't everyone want that lol

It’s just their way of selling you on the best.

I’m a long-time Mini user, having always found the larger sizes awkward. That said, I have been using a Mini at work for note taking for a year and have found it to be just a bit too small for comfortable use with MS OneNote. It also can’t do PDF documents easily, so I recently switched to an 11” iPad Pro. Got a Magic Keyboard and a folio case to swap depending on use.

A few observations:
  • 11” is great for business use. Landscape with keyboard is perfectly functional, but portrait and handheld use with the Pencil is better than the 13”, which can become unwieldy. I’m satisfied with the switch in a work setting.
  • Mini is still superior for use as a giant iPhone around the house (internet and content consumption). I have no plans to switch for personal use.
  • This is my first experience with Face ID on an iPad. I find it to be quite superior to Touch ID, surprisingly. The interesting wrinkle is that, unlike an iPhone, you’re not always physically touching an iPad when you unlock it (like when it’s on your desk). As soon as you look at it, it’s already unlocked and ready to go. Touch ID has never bothered me, but I’m actually liking it better for use on an iPad than I do with an iPhone.
  • It would be great to have a version of the 11” Magic Keyboard that fit the Mini. When folded up, it would look just like an 11”, but it could have a custom-sized cutout for Mini use. That would solve the keyboard size/width problem for the smallest screen.
  • My goodness, the screen of the 11” is just so, so much better. It’s deeply frustrating to not have access to this tech in the Mini size.
All told, Mini for personal, 11” for business. Apple, please put ProMotion and Face ID into the Mini form factor, it’s silly to not have this option.

I had an M2 iPad Pro, and got an iPad mini this morning. I’m seriously considering selling my iPad Pro.

It made sense when my Intel MacBook was running on its last legs. That thing was getting slow and laggy, and the iPad Pro was a beast at the time. It still is. But I have an M3 Pro MacBook Pro now, and I’m blown away by the speed and battery life, and the amount of things you can throw at it.

The iPad mini will remain a great device for nighttime reading and browsing, but the iPad Pro seems a little redundant now.

ProMotion would be great. Not necessarily a dealbreaker though. You notice it when scrolling obviously, but if you’re watching 60fps video, everything still looks very smooth.

It’s a shame it still has LCD too. At the bare minimum, they should’ve upgraded it to Mini-LED.

That’s the situation I was in a year or so ago… I had M1 iPad Pro 12.9” with Magic Keyboard, and I’d spent about 18 months using it as my “primary” device, screen sharing my Mac mini when necessary. Which was an annoyance, on the good days. So I bought a MacBook Pro and let the iPad just be an iPad.

Then I bought an iPad mini 6, because reading books on the 12.9” was cumbersome. And I discovered that just about ANYTHING was less cumbersome on the mini 6, to the point that the iPad Pro was redundant. Anything the mini 6 wasn’t good at, I just used the MacBook. I sold the iPad Pro to a friend, and eventually upgraded to the mini 7 to get more storage.

My hope...nay...dream:

iPad Mini Promotion up to 120hz, OLED, M1 or M2 would be fine, but if the M4 IS more efficient from a power/battery standpoint... Than that. Maybe 4 speakers?. I've had every mini since the OG1.

I gave my Mini5 to my niece recently, kept the 6, and bought an open box Mini7 256 from Best Buy for $149. I've got an M1 11" pro, 14" M1 MPB maxed out and recently got the M4 mac mini base... I think I'm covered now, regardless of the usage need. :)

But, C'mon Apple, stop giving the Mini the short shrift - show it some Love!

You forgot to add 3hr battery life as a feature.
