Actually, after thinking on it for a while, I think there's a far better reason. The camera sensors used in the iPhone are standard size (3x2?). So if Apple were to default to a 16x9 or whatever sized photo, you're tossing out a portion of the image before you ever get to see it. It would be like going to a restaurant and having the waiter toss out 20% of your food before it's delivered to the table. The way they do it, you get to see the full image captured by the sensor. Then it's up to the end user to remove any portion of the image they don't want with cropping.

Could they provide other aspect ratios like they already do with square? Of course. But this is Apple and since when have their products been overflowing with options? My guess is if you don't like the default aspect ratio, either find a camera app that will give you what you want or crop (perhaps even with an automated tool). Apple could change things. But my money says they don't.

Several points:
  • Sensors used in most digital cameras & phones are very close to 4:3, not 3:2. The 3:2 aspect ratio is a peculiarity of those mimicing 35mm film (Double-frame aka Full Frame); these are the FF/FX and APS-c sensors. Most larger and smaller sensors follow the old 35mm movie aspect ratio that was mimiced in early video for TV.
  • The big issue is that there are no sensors made that mimic the shape of modern computer & phone displays so any camera app that presents those shapes must do so by cropping.
  • I agree that it seems odd (read: poor app design) to not provide for a user choice of default aspect ratio. Out of the box, the camera app should default to the sensors aspect ratio (e.g. 4:3 in most cases) but it should also provide a user pref to set one of the several "popular" shapes (e.g. 4:3, 3:2, 16:9, and perhaps a "match display" option that varies with device). Camera apps that don't provide this are not as good as they could easily be.

I can agree that it looks old and outdated compared to other apps, with having the huge black borders on the top and the bottom...but have you compared the pictures? Using the entire screen wouldn't give you more image, it actually just crops out the sides. I prefer this method because you get more image. You can always crop out the sides and get that 16:9 aspect, but you can't get that extra image on the sides if they were never captured.

I actually hate trying to use images saved from Snapchat. They never have enough image on the sides to work with so pictures are usually too zoomed-in.

What I personally would like to see is the camera app take pictures in 4:3 but use a full-screen view. That way you get extra image on the sides when you view the picture but the interface looks nicer when you're using it. I know most people wouldn't really like that option since you cant view the entire image you're taking at the moment, but I would prefer it. Maybe like a full screen toggle in the camera app?

Just did some testing.. and I could be wrong but it looks like the iPhone actually captures the data for 3:2. See the attached images. The original OOC is at the standard iPhone 4:3 aspect ratio. I then created a copy and via Edit converted to 3:2. If you look at what is included in the image it looks like the 3:2 has ‘data’/image that was cropped out of the stock 4:3.

Note the trees included in image that are not in the original 4:3 as well as the more green marsh grass in the water..

Again, I could be wrong but sharing. So we can ‘edit’ to 3:2 if we desire. I wish we could set that as the default.

The camera captures in it native, nominal 4:3 format.
If you don’t want or like to edit and want other formats, then use. 3rd party app. PureShot is a good one that allows capture at different aspect ratios.
It would maybe be nice if the native app offered that, but it doesn’t. It is what it is.
[doublepost=1539821739][/doublepost]As already mentioned, most sensors for these sized cameras have a nominal 4:3 aspect ratio. Any camera app that’s producing another ratio is simply cropping the 4:3 image.
