The original game source from System 7 days has been modified so it could get ported to Intel Mac and Linux back in Lion days, the "new" source still had 32bit logic and this was again rewritten as a universal app just before M1 so it could work on newer macOS. Since then it has been the same source but ported to work on ARM/M series. Though the port to apple silicon is compiled as an ARM app, it is going to be buggy since it's still a port of a re-written port of the original.

That being said, I'm happy to share that development on Maelstrom2 is underway and includes the classic game with newer updates and graphics in an optional "Original Mode." The Sequel to the game, Maelstrom2, is being worked on at the same time and includes a small development team. I'm happy to confirm that the original sprite artist Ian Gilman is part of the project and is super excited to see where development leads, as this game holds a special place for all of us. We are going to keep the original mode as close to the classic as we can, with newer/updated sprites and logic.

Maelstrom2 is the sequel to the original in 3D, and will feature an online multiplayer mode as well. Without going into specifics I can say that it's looking great with the new mechanics and features. If anyone is interested in becoming part of the team feel free to reach out and give a little background on what you can do.

M2 builds are planned for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, Windows, Linux, and iOS in the future.
Game art is still being worked on, but here is a sneak peek :p

If anyone is interested in the development feel free to message me for the discord link.

Damn, I love to hear it. I can not offer any help besides testing on unusulal HW/SW combination but have one idea. As we spend endless nights with friends at college we played it sometimes as dual player, each controling part of tool/weapons. It was dificult on one keyboard. If you can think of this idea and solution it would be nice.

Maelstrom on the m4 Maxbook - I discovered the up and side keys suck on this keyboard!! It should be played on a full size keyboard which has very long key travel that you need to hit hard, along with loud mechanical clicks and a fat quarter inch cable to make it work. And not a backlighted keyboard either, that would be the wrong decade.

Hilarious. 👍
