Basically the Dev's install the Lion GM and continue to use it when the official release is out and install updates like normal or will they have to re-install the final version for retail again?

the GM IS 10.7.0. So yes.

how are u so sure?

if its that way then why wont everybody install the GM and then just update to the final via software update?

that doesnt make sense, how do u know u can update to the final via software update from the golden master?

I also was wondering about this. I would imagine you could just continue using it and update to the next revision but with Apple who knows.

Honestly - GM is Apple's code for retail

Because Apple will make it work, or there will be some ticked customers.

well, for one thing there was no seed note with this GM release (nor any warning when generating the App Store code) that stated anything about NOT being able to update.

I think we'll be ok to install this.

They have physical media for the existing and new hardware stock to manage, plus from a software development perspective, you still have to cut it off at some point and switch to update mode.

Sure; but if there is a huge bug (unlikely, sure, but they did have multiple GM releases for iOS 4.2), then they would probably release another GM.

And who says they are going to do a DVD update for existing/new stock? I'd imagine they'd slip in a Mac App Store code to the packaging, instead of a DVD. But we'll see.

Anyways, I'm just refuting that one point; I do believe that this will be updatable in the future.

Without the need to burn this software to physical media, then Apple could release multiple GMs if any big bugs are discovered. So technically, you have no idea if what you said is true. :p

That is not how software releases on this scale work. If there is a serious show-stopper bug found between now and the actual release, sure, you might find a second GM. By 'serious' I mean 'takes your important data out back and shoots it in the face'. If that were to happen, the actual release would be delayed by whatever period there is between now and the release (assuming no such bug.)

True, there is no manufacturing going on for the retail release, so that delay can be skipped, but that's not the only reason there's time between GM and retail release.

i doubt this GM will be updateable, if it is then i dont see why wont all of us install the GM now and start using Lion...

but i dont think it will be up datable nor am i taking chances checking if it will, it would piss me really bad if i installed the gm and wont be able to update to the final.

Suit yourself, but the GM and 'the final' are the same thing.

You need to look up the definition of "golden master."

i know what golden master is.

why isnt everyone installing the GM right NOW then if its the same as the final version and can be updated to the final on release date? how are YOU so sure? do you have proof?

In the past, developers have had to re-install once the final shipping version is actually released. No different than iOS GM's.

Because this is the way Apple have done things for a very long time. It is possible that they will choose to change this for OSX Lion but chances are very slim.

Plus, Who isn't installing the GM seed? I know I am!

Because it's still pre-release software and not generally available.

And I'm "so sure" because I've been in this game for a long, long time.

Even if you were to install the final version
over the GM -- it would not hurt what you already
have on the drive. It would just replace it but keep
programs and content in place.

Here is my predicament....

I have a developer in the family. He will install
the GM on my iMac.

I want to support Apple. So, when the final is
released to consumers, I want to be able to use
my GM to go to the App Store and download the
consumer version.

I take it that should work....yes?

you dont get it do you? Apple CLEARLY said you wont be able to install Lion's Final version if you have the Developer Preview 4, now that the GM came out, nobody knows if its the same with the golden master aswell or if you can now actually update to the final version via software update or something.

No YOU don't get it

Did I ever mention DP4? No, I didn't.

I mentioned the Gold Master. I am going from
Snow Leopard to the Gold Master.

The Gold Master, for all intensive purposes IS
THE FINAL RELEASE.

Now reread my post again.

I want to reinstall the consumer version over
the Gold Master so I can pay for it and support Apple.

All I want to know is if I can do that.
