I know many people tormented even the DPs without a hitch. What those did, I believe, was just phone home to Apple, and this was more for diagnostic than for anti-piracy. The GM is basically the final version (unless, like many have stated, there's a MAJOR bug that cannot possibly be allowed), so I don't believe there will be any issue with the torrented GM copies. That being said, since Lion only costs $30, I see no reason people need to be tormenting it. I see those that torrent it, even at this price, as incredibly irresponsible and inconsiderate.

Some people are just impatient and want to use it now, and then pay later.

Does anyone know how Lion will receive system updates? During the keynote, Phil said Lion "obeys all the Mac App Store rules." I'm worried that if we download and install the GM it won't accept updates from the App Store since the install won't be tied to our Apple IDs.

Unless, Lion will still receive updates through System Updates. I would think it should. Especially since some people don't need to ever download Lion through the App Store since it will come pre-installed on their new Macs.

I don't see that being a problem because they can't force someone to make an Apple ID when they buy a new Mac just to get system updates, and don't updates still come through Software Updates and not the App Store?

Besides that, if you already have an id - as i understand is the case with the person that has the question - i think if you buy Lion from the appstore upon its release, it will then be tied to your Apple id, and you shouldn't have any problems.
At least that's how i have things in my mind

"Basically the Dev's install the Lion GM and continue to use it when the official release is out and install updates like normal or will they have to re-install the final version for retail again?"

Of course, it's impossible to state with authority that the Lion GM will be "update-able" through Software Update to versions 10.7.1, etc. -- BUT, I can state with assurance that the GM of Snow Leopard was fully upgradeable.

Running 10.6.8 now, upgraded from SL GM build 10a432.

I have the GM sitting in front of me....

I wasn't going to install it for fear that it
would not support system updates....

....but then I got to thinking....

If they are prepping for a Macbook Air
launch on the 14th or 19th with Lion
preinstalled, they have to start installing
that software now.

I would bet what they are installing now
is the Gold Master.

So under that assumption, I am going to
install the Gold Master and hope it will be
the only version of Lion I will ever have to
do a full install of again.

I have been testing Apple's OS betas since Tiger. The GM of each version up to and including Snow Leopard will update once the 1st update is available via software update so i don't see why that would change now.

You can also download the combo upgrade from Apple and apply it as well.

DJLO,

Thank you so much.

What is the combo upgrade?

I meant the DMG file for the updates apple releases. You can download them off apple's support site and apply them locally. We do this at the office instead of having each machine download from software update, we use the DMG.

Please read

What is a "Golden Master"

It's an old article from the Apple developers website. It sheds some light on some of the things that were discussed earlier in this post regarding "what a Golden Master is." You may need to scroll up a little as the Internet Archive toolbar covers up the first part. If this still stand true to Apple versioning then the Golden Master is not what gets sent to the general public. The NonRelRev number is going to be off. With the GM it is set to zero while the actual release is set to a different number. How much this will affect users updating, I don't know. I installed the GM on a separate partition to test it out see how it functions and if I would really like to update before the 10.7.1 release comes out.

One More Thing...

I noticed that people are saying that they are stuck with 10.6.8, have you checked Google lately?

Combo Upgrade

DJLO,

Thank you so much.

What is the combo upgrade?

The combo upgrade is is the upgrade that is used to update to the latest version. Instead of upgrading from 10.6 to 10.6.1, 10.6.2, and so forth, you just get all of the upgrades in one package to bring you to the latest version which would be 10.6.8. For business who have to deploy this upgrade this is nice because they can download it directly from Apple and push it out to all of the computers instead of having to download it X number of times. It's nice and simple, which is why Microsoft hasn't thought of it yet.

Reinstall your OS with the Mac OS X Install DVD that you have and you'll see how it works.:D

What a discussion...!

A GM is intended to be the final version. The GM used to be the "golden original" from which all copies are produced.
With software bought online the GM can be pulled and replaced by another GM if necessary, but that's not the intention. For that we have Release Candidates (RC).

The developers get the GM early to test (and tweak) their software so that once the release has gone public, they're ready.

This is what I did, torrent the GM but once it hits store I will purchase. I have done this for the last 3 GM releases because I support apple and seriously Apple OS's are cheap as crap compared to windows.
