Apple doesn't do pie in the sky things that aren't realistic. I'm sure Apple has lots of crazy futuristic prototypes but if they're not ready for primetime Apple is not going announce them. Get back to me when this particular watch actually ships and gets good reviews.

The iPod was considered "pie in the sky".
The iphone was considered "pie in the sky".
The ipad was considered "pie in the sky".

Every single Apple mobile device has been scrutinized and second guessed by the industry only to become the defacto standard for mobile devices due to their popularity and reliability. Apple's vision for their mobile devices has always held up to future trends but I don't see the watch being as dominant as their other offerings.

A watch is something personal for a man. It's the only universally accepted piece of jewelery for men and as a result men take their watches very seriously. A man's watch should be masculine, it should be able to withstand abuse and above all else, it should never be confused for a womans watch. If a woman can wear the same watch design as a man then it's my opinion that the watch design is too feminine. In my humble opinion, the Apple Watch is way too feminine for a typical masculine male (never mind it's technical issues, most notably it's lack of battery life).

The hybrid watch in question, in my opinion, is the perfect marriage between classical timepiece design and modern technology. I understand that this concept might be a few years off but at one point so was the iPod, iPhone and ipad. Only after people had the opportunity to use these products did they realize the beauty and craftsmanship that went into them. If a no name company can produce a working prototype (however bad it may be), then imagine what Apple could have done with their deep pockets. Instead, they delivery a fancy Nano on a fancy strap. There was no "out of the box" thinking on this product, they went straight for the lowest common denominator and ultimately delivered a product that only suits the lowest common denominator.

Apple had the chance to do something truly unique with their watch. They had the opportunity to think outside the box and deliver a device that could change the way we think about timepieces in the future. Instead, they deliver a blinged up version of a Nano on a wrist strap that despite it's fancy look is still just an upgraded Nano. I guess Apple created this device completely with their shareholders' pockets in mind.

I was disappointed in the Apple Watch but I love the concept of the hybrid in question. I will gladly wait for this "pie in the sky" technology to mature and buy one went I feel it's appropriate. This concept is brilliant and something Apple would have created just a few short years ago. However, what were seeing out of Apple now (not just the watch) is a lack of vision. Without Jobs Apple is just an above average tech company toeing the same line as Samsung, Sony, Fitbit, etc...

Seems to me there is a misconception about Apple 2.0 that it was constantly delivering these revolutionary mind blowing products. I don't think anyone considered iPod or iPad pie in the sky products. iPad was just a bigger iPod touch. Many people mocked these products when they came out.

Again come back to me when this utopian hybrid watch with the "craftsmanship" of a mechanical watch and the "smarts" of a smartwatch, along with great battery life ships and ships in volume.

As far as Watch being too feminine I don't consider the watch with milanese loop or link bracelet to be too feminine. I actually appreciate the fact Apple has taken women into consideration. Most, if not all Android Wear watches are geared towards men.

Apple's iPod and iPhone were most definitely considered "pie in the sky" products. The whole concept of digital music being stored on a mobile, miniature hard drive was completely foreign. The music industry pundits did nothing but criticize Apple's forward thinking until the reality of the situation forced them into half heartedly accepting the tech.

The iPhone was another "pie in the sky" device that rocked the cell phone industry. Up to that point flip phones and slide out phones were the norm. When Apple introduced a full touch screen display on the iPhone most people criticized their direction. After all, who needs a phone for Internet connectivity when you have a laptop? Right?

The direction of the Apple Watch is so far off the mark that it really is surprising. I'm used to Apple pioneering technology instead of recycling existing technology which they clearly did with their watch.

We're going to have to agree to disagree. And I don't know what you mean when you say the Watch is "so far off the mark. Whwt would be on the mark in your mind (besides concepts that may not be realistic at this time)?

Not at all. At least a year before Apple brought out the iPod, people were already using IBM Microdrives in their PDAs and MP3 players for music storage.

(There are plenty of old-timers around here who will remember handhelds with double slot Compact Flash capability from around the turn of the century. Microdrives fit into such slots.)

Actually, smartphone sales were already accelerating at the time, and it was widely predicted that touch versions would take over smartphones in 2007, since by 2005 they already made up over 1/3 of smartphone sales worldwide. Heck, that's likely why Apple decided to jump into the market.

I was wondering if its possible to have a real mechanical smart watch with a lcd screen on top of it?

So when the screen is off, you could see the real mechanical watch, but when the screen is on, it covers the real watch and you see only the screen.

Could this be possible?

CASIO did it ages ago!
