Maybe. We will see. But I disagree.

We have had an M1 and we still have devices being released with that chip 7 months later. Apple is constantly in the process of refreshing designs and more than just chips. So it’s not just as simple as a new chip and ship it out the door.

Apple designing their own chips does mean that they can have their own update cycle. But, Why every year? Remember, they have finite resources and they haven’t even released a chip for the upper end computers yet - we don’t even have the full foundation of M series chips. I think it’s wishful thinking to have a whole new set of chipsets come out every year for every device - pro and consumer levels. That would mean the ENTIRE lineup of computers, phones, and iPads all update yearly... I don’t think so.

And the question remains, at least for the iPad... why? The things are insane. Why spend the money and time changing out the production just for a moderately better chip? The average consumer doesn’t even know what an M1 chip is.

But this is the real reason = Apple has been using its own chips in iPads since the beginning and they had an 18 month cycle most of the time. Why change it now?

It wouldn’t make sense to me at all.

Again, however, the screen on the 11” is the one thing that makes me wonder if there will be a quicker update. I can’t see that staying different for too long.
My reason for wanting M2 with the iPad PRO, is to use external screens. This is not possible with the M1 chip.

This is possible even with older iPads. I know for sure it's doable with the 2017 iPad Pro.

Caveat, this has to be coded in the app itself and most app developers don't explicitly support external displays so we just get crappy mirroring.

I'm confused. What about the M1 chip limits the use of external screens?

You're saying you want the iPad to power 2 or 3 external monitors?

I'd question the usefulness of that until Apple adds proper multiple monitor support to iPadOS. That's a software issue.

I think he is referring to M1 only allowing 1 external monitor on Macs and needing ports like HDMI for more (which are never coming to iPad...)
The thing is, he is speculating that iPadOS will support several external monitors in the future, while it doesn't even have proper support for one external monitor at OS-level (it's only at individual app level)
So there is a ton of speculations in that assumption and at this point there is very little point trying to guess...

The correct answer is none of us has real clue beyond pure speculation. Personally I don't think we'll see an updated 12.9 (or some different large sized iPad) until at least fall of 2022, perhaps for Christmas. The M1 in the current generation is way more powerful than virtually everyone using an iPad needs, the current 12.9 just introduce mini-led... What are they going to do to make meaningful upgrades? The software is much more in needed of upgrading than the hardware. We MIGHT see an 11" w mini-LED earlier because I think their intention was to release it along side the 12.9" mini-LED and production and supply issues just didn't cooperate. Even then my guess would not be until at least sometime late fall 2022.
