This is true.

This isn't true at all. I use Linux all the time (heck I sysadmin many Linux servers), and it isn't nearly as friendly as Windows or OS X. It simply isn't there yet.

Personally... I don't know what you mean by friendly, but that discussion would be off topic. :D

I, and many tech blogs agree, that the latest Ubuntu is right up to speed with all other OS on the market now and could easily be considered a competitor.

Even if you don't think it's implemented exactly the way you want it, I'm sure GNav is going to be the same. Some people will think that TomTom is more friendly than GNav and want to buy the commercial version of a Navigation app.

I guess the whole point I'm trying to make is not that free software is better or inferior, but that there is a place in the market for both. One does not make the other irrelevant.

Yeah, I do agree that there can be competition. However it makes it a little sticky for competitors since Google is bundling the software with the phone and advertising it as a major feature. I am interested to see how this pans out.

With the iPhone, if you want GPS turn-by-turn, its going to cost you, no matter what. With Android, its free for everyone, however you have the option to buy Tom Tom (for example). Major difference for the companies.

And at the same time, Google stands to make no money off of the Android Market (other than it convincing people to buy phones which in turn makes Android more popular which in turn makes people license the software. ;) ). So I'm not sure if they really care. Haha.
