I want an ipad only because my ipod touch doesnt have 3g.... I told my mom if i can get it and she said no because my brother told her that apple rips people off... my brother says all apple products are worth much less than it should be.... and since my brother is an computer expert my mom belives him :/ so can u give me reasons to convince my brother on how its worth the money so i can get it please :D thx

Sounds like he isn't a computer expert if he talks trash like that, more like an Apple hater, which will make your bid to get an iPad a daunting task. :(

Generally, Apple products cost more because they deliver more. Sounds like your brother and/or mother don't understand the concept of paying more for something that's higher quality. Some people think that Apple charges for the brand name, like designer clothes which cost more but often aren't actually any better, but that really isn't the case. I have found the only way to convince an Apple hater of this fact is for them to actually start using Apple products. You really do have to experience Apple to understand the truth.

Aside from all that, why do you even need an iPad? If it's just to goof around with, I can see your mom's point. That's a lot of money for something you don't need for anything in particular. Lack of 3G might not be compelling since 3G access will cost even more money on top. Are there other features it offers that you can truly utilize that you can't get elsewhere? It might help you make a more convincing argument.

If Apple are ripping people off ask your brother to call the bluff. Find something like the iPad with 3G and a good app store and multitouch for less than the price of the iPad.

Tell him to go price most used Macbook Pros, iPhones, and iPads on Craigslist and let you know how they hold their value compared to PC laptops, etc. I've found that Apple products hold their value way more than Windows-based PC's etc do. I can sell a 16gb iPad wifi right now on Craigslist for exactly the same that I paid for it (including tax).

But yeah, sounds like an Apple hater, so good luck with that. Maybe the best thing to do is save up your money and buy it on your own?

Bring your mom into an Apple Store or other retailer and use some of those app on it to demonstrate the iPad anyhow much it's better than a net book that cost about the same and how you don't have to bother her with expensive repairs, porridge service, and shotty quality. Also remember to tell her about the resale value of your product after a year or so compared to others and how it doesn't get viruses like regular computers do! Well most anyways because they are incompatible :)

sucks that your bother is throwing you under the bus like that. I doubt you'll be able to convince him to change his mind since he obviously hates Apple.

Too bad. BUt maybe you could take your Mom out on her own to the Apple store and show it to her and let her use it and talk to the sale people to get an idea of what its all about.

You may want to look into the iPhone 4 if you want 3g. Might be easier to convince your bother or mother about the value of that product over the iPad.

No offense but are you like 13 and your brother like in his 20's?
You just may be SOL if your mom doesn't value your judgement over his.

But with your brother, it's sometimes tough to turn out an apple hater. For some reason their hate just grows as apple becomes more popular. Its the hater way. Just buying it yourself would be the next route

Also 3lionsbecks idea of bringing her into the store may be a great idea. People really can be amazed when they experience first hand how smoothly and simply the ipad functions. You may get her to wanting one herself.

My parents don't even use computers but its on their wish list this holiday season.

Tell your mother your brother was already talking about putting her in a home.

Split them apart, make them fight. You'll get your iPad.

Wow, seriously? Your brother is one of those people? How exactly is Apple ripping people off? The price of the iPad is one of its biggest selling points.

Seriously, just tell him to find you a comparable tablet, touch-enabled with a wide variety of optimized applications and a stable future.

Hint: it's not the JooJoo. Or some Faildroid device.

There is an alternative solution:
Depending on what country you live in you may be able to get the Mifi 3G router for all your portable 3G needs! It works with the ipod touch! Definitely a cheaper alternative.

But I'm not going to help you spend £500/$600 of you parents money, it's there money and if they were willing to buy this kind of thing for you it would make you seem very spoilt (especially since you already have an ipod touch), which is never a good thing....

I completely agree. Either save up yourself, as you do sound young. Or get a mifi which is much cheaper and will give you 3G access.

Oh, and your brother doesn't sound like a computer expert, he sounds like an apple hater.

You might not want to resort to calling the Android platform "Faildroid" in the same comment that you are trying to call someone out for doing the same thing with Apple products.

I do agree, unless its your own money you will need to convince you mom that its of value. Even then, you should respect your mother's decision if she does not want to purchase it for you. There may be other circumstances behind the decision than just your brother's opinion.

Show your mom the sales stats. Last time I checked it was 3 million sold, and that was like 2 months ago. Apple must be doing something right with those numbers :)

Sent from my iPad :p

Sucks that your brother seems to be an Apple hater... :(

But I can see the fail in your quest for an iPad since you said that you only want the iPad for the 3G capability. This is the hurdle that you need to convince your mom on - why do you need 3G and the added expense (maybe for her in the end). I know I would like to hear why based on your post...

Just a quick question, but how old are you? If everyone else's guesses on here are right (13), then I honestly don't see the point in you getting an iPad unless you're willing to pay the money for it. I might be 18, but I had to work my butt of for it the entire summer (read: 40 hour weeks) in order to buy it, a case and all my apps for it. There was NO way I could convince my parents it was a good enough deal until AFTER I bought it.

Before you start whining to your parents about it, I would suggest trying to figurre out exactly what you want to use it for. I use mine for school. Goofing off with it, or just having it to have, is not a good enough reason.

13 and you might be getting an iPad from your Mom? I grew up in the 70's with no allowance and was happy to get a baseball mitt. And you want a 500 dollar iPad. That's crazy.

For one its blind hatred out of ignorance. I dislike Android, despite having a Nexus One, because it would likely be horrible on tablets as has all the prototypes shown. It's just scaled up Android 1.x, when 3.0 is supposed to be out by the end of the year. (And no, Apple did a lot more than just scale up iOS.)

Careful there, you're starting to sound like a certain Monty Python sketch! :p

I do agree though, especially since you already have an ipod touch.

I have three points:

1) If you can't buy it yourself be happy with an iPod touch--you should feel lucky enough that you had someone buy that for you.

2) My two brothers are in computer industry. They would NEVER buy Apple products. They know how to build their own computer. I am a computer luddite and too lazy to deal with computer headaches. I'm willing to pay for a better product that gives me less headache and heartache. The premium is for things other than the raw specs. And according to people who seem to know their stuff, Apple products and its quality are not really overpriced.

3) I don't have an iPad. I don't have an iPod Touch. I have a MBP that I put on a high-interest credit card because I needed it for grad school (which is also putting me into debt). Count your blessings...
