Whenever I travel I usually buy a prepaid data SIM from the destination airport or carrier. This allows me to keep using my phone like I would at home without incurring severe roaming charges. Not having to swap SIMs for this is pretty nice as it's easy to lose the original SIM. I just wish my carrier started supporting eSIM so I would not have to have a physical SIM in the XS at all until I travel.

I use project fi, my wife is on t-mo. It will be nice when I can give her a spare data sim from FI for her to use in her phone whilst roaming so she can get full speed LTE abroad without having to constantly enable the $5/day T-Mo function.

I change my number often, usually when the barrage of automated car accident or ppi claim calls begin. However I usually keep the sim in a second old phone to look at now and again in case I forgot to inform someone. Then usually I’ve forgotten that someone sends a text to my registered number as part of website security etc.
Having dual sim would mean websites that require my number can have the old number and I can activate it for the short period it’s needed. If google need to send me a text to sign in from a new device etc then ditto. There are plenty of times I already use my old number that I eagerly await dual sim.
Then there’s trips to the USA, currently I have Three on a contract that allows me free data and calls. However it’s dreadful, slow and unreliable. A simple one month deal from a local provider would be ideal and allow me a much better experience. I might even ditch Three and go elsewhere as their roaming like home deal is all I mainly choose them for. I’d imagine most would use esim for a second sim while abroad, with my understanding that you’re not limited to just one esim, just one esim active at a time.

Up until I read into it a few days ago, I never considered having a 2nd SIM. But now after reading into it, I definitely see myself utilizing it.

I do a lot of international travel, and T-Mobile has the best international perks. Unlimited free text and data in 150+ countries. However, the data is slowwwww, capped at 128Kb. Although it’s fast enough for voice calls over messaging apps like WhatsApp, and Signal.

Lately, while back in the US, T-Mobile reception is going downhill. So I’m thinking of switching to Verizon, which doesn’t have a favorable international plan. You either get paltry data, or pay $10 a day.

What I’m thinking is switch to Verizon, and get a Travel Pass when I travel, then get a 2nd SIM for data only while abroad. That way I can still receive calls on my primary number.

I’ve seen a lot of “cheating on your spouse” comments, in which case a second SIM isn’t necessary. I use an app called “Burner” which is great for the cheating enthusiast.

But if you get the travel pass, then there is no need for the second local SIM, right? The travel pass includes phone, text and data.

Verizon travel pass only includes 2GB per month, and I’ll certainly go over that. So I’d get travel pass in conjunction with local SIM.

Travel Pass for retaining my main phone + text + little bit of data - which I’d use if I can’t get a SIM right away, as an example.

Local SIM for every day data use.
