So the Pages version on the iPad must be severely crippled as it has no footnotes at all and actually strips out formatting! This is going to cause a problem for me to use it for work. Anyone else have any insight?

Set up a desktop or an always-available notebook with a VNC server and use the iPad to access the full desktop version of Word.

It's what I've been doing since Saturday and it works phenomenally, assuming you have wifi everywhere you go. When I don't, I use Pages on the iPad only for preparing unformatted text and notes, and copy everything over into a real document later.

Pages for iPad was always going to be limited compared even to Pages for Mac, so I'm not let down in the least. This is how I planned to use the iPad from the beginning.

Pages does have redlining

I'm not a huge fan of Pages, but it does redline. See Edit > Track Changes

That's simply not accurate. I think you need to qualify the "pleading requirement" statement by state, district, or practice area.

I practice civil litigation in Florida, and my firm uses Pages exclusively for all pleadings, discovery, motions, etc. There is nothing in my practice area, from filing to verdict, that Pages can't handle (with ease). Most folks underestimate the application.

To the OP's question, Pages does have redline and track changes functionality.

I think the point you are missing is the OP was asking about using Pages on the ipad to produce legal documents. Sure, Pages works (ok, but not the best) on a Mac, but your productivty would be inexcusable if you tried to write a brief from beginning to end on an ipad. Use your macbook pro.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_5 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8L1 Safari/6533.18.5)

there are blogs about this already online. i would highly recommend reading them to see in-depth comparisons o the major programs.

in my work, i use multimarkdown for footnotes and do drafts and revisions in plain text. i save the formatting until the final stage. it works great, because i am alone. i don't know how well it would work for collaborative projects, and i suspect you'll find the mba to be a more enjoyable experience for what you want to do.

exactly. I am an attorney too, and I would be crazy to try and type something of any length on an iPad. I would also go crazy if my staff tried to do the same. Even if you use a keyboard with the iPad, you will not be as fast or productive on an iPad as a real computer.

@Sdevante

Fine, fine, I'm pedantic, but Pages should be criticized for what it actually doesn't do!

in case anyone's still looking for a yes-no and how to response, YES you can use Pages for red lining a legal document. go to Edit and Track Changes.

Professional vs Personal

Do you do you legal research by Google? If not, then I suggest you don't rely on iPad and Pages for your professional services. How many clients or opposing counsel use Pages? Same comments apply to Numbers, which is also a wonderful PERSONAL product. Best suggestion if you want portability and professional capacity - get a MBA with Office. And let the hail storm start!

I am planning on using my iPad for work and am in the legal profession. Does anyone have experience using Pages to write legal briefs which require footnote citation? Does Pages have a redline or track changes function? I tried to review the description for Pages discussing Endnote X2, but that seems more like a publishing bibliography tool and might not work for footnotes. Unfortunately, I think the lack of these two things will hamper the iPads utility for legal writing using Pages instead of Word.

I usually use Word for Mac at home and will occasionally have problems when I send a redlined version to a PC Word user who is using Word 2003 but nothing too bad. The Mac and PC versions of Word are mostly seamless in conversion between the two.

Thanks in advance!
[doublepost=1500139308][/doublepost]I use my Ipad pro for legal work. I have found that many many people are looking for a usable pleading paper template, but no one has created or found one, very usable. Until now. I have created one out of necessity. Numbers along the left. Double line on the left, single line on the right. Page numbers on the bottom. It's awsome. Just email me, if you want the form. I'm happy to share.
