I aslo found this; https://www.crucial.com/support/articles-faq-ssd/ssds-and-smart-data, and this; https://www.crucial.com/support/storage-executive

From what I can understand is that there really is no SMART monitoring for SSDs, and crucial has their own app for their ssds, but it is windows only version, and my external hard drive is a mac formatted drive now. I do have windows virtual machines via Parallels desktop. I tried installing the Crucial drive app on my windows 10 virtual machine, but it did not work, it only saw the virtual machine.

Maybe one day there will be better built in SMART monitoring in apps, for external hard drives, and especially ssd drives.

I aslo looked in my security section in system preferences, and the same thing/issue; I can clock on the approve button next to the developer name, but nothing happens, it does not go away like it should, it is like the button just does not respond, it makes the click motion, but nothing happens.
Have you tried with SIP disabled?

You can also disable the consent or manually add consent for SATSMARTDriver
Code:
spctl kext-consent add 4ZNF85T75D
https://eclecticlight.co/2019/06/01/how-to-bypass-mojave-10-14-5s-new-kext-security/

The kext is loaded by the app when needed and works for SATA SSDs

From the page:
“These kext-consentcommands only work when you’re booted in Recovery mode: they should return errors if you’re running in regular mode”

This is the hard drive I have in that enclosure; https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09FRRWVWX/ref=twister_B09RYPDGS3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

This is the enclosure; https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Y81R1JM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I am not sure if the enclosure does support SAT SMART, how do I check that?
The Crucial SSD is SATA and the web site says it does support some SMART data. But the DriveDX help pages suggest some issues with M500 https://binaryfruit.com/drivedx/kb#crucial-m500-m03

I do have some doubts about the ugreen enclosure. It is not the type of brand which supplies more than minimal information. A different enclosure might bring success.

Thank you, I suspected that, even if I rebooted in safe mode, just to try to get the SMART on the drives, it still might not work.

I have been thinking of taking the drives out of the Ugreen enclosures.

I have been looking at multi-bay enclosures, and I am torn between using individual enclosures for each drive, or putting them all into a multi-bay enclosure. A multi-bay would free up some ports, and reduce wires. I am finding with individual enclosures, with all the wires, I have and all too easily accidentally bump them, and the disks start ejecting improperly. So I thought a good multi-bay enclosure would work for this.

Which would be better? a multi-bay or stay with individual ones?

Any suggestions on good SMART supported individual or multi-bay enclosures? many seem to have gone to thunderbolt, and I do not have that on my 5,1 cMP, only USB ports, or firewire ports.

I forgot to ask the obvious: have you clicked on unlock before clicking on Allow?

Yes, I double checked that, I know I could have missed that but, but yes I did. I also even made sure that I had the bottom button selected to allow from App store and identified developers. It seems there is something going on with the clicking there, I am using an apple trackpad, and the button is there to click, I click on it, but it does not do anything. I even dug out my old apple mouse and tried to click on it, but same thing, nothing happens, and it does not load.

I had not fully appreciated your Mac. Firewire would be almost twice as fast as USB 2. But expensive!

Do you have any internal space for SATA SSDs (10x faster than external USB 2)?

Sorry, I am not the person to give advice on external enclosures - multi-bay or otherwise.

I can't get this to work either.
Kext (0.10.3) is loaded and running, but USB SSD don't show up.

What SSD? Many USB SSD are not SAT capable. And even those that are (e.g my Samsung T5), may not be visible with 0.10.3 though they were with older versions of the kext/macOS.
Frankly, none of them show up.
Crucial p1000, WD Black 850, WD Blue 570, Samsung 970 EVO, various different enclosures

Are any of those SATA drives? I think they are all NVMe which means they don't do SMART. Maybe if your enclosures are Thunderbolt.
oh. Yeah NVMe.
sloppy reading i guess. Yeah they all read fine in a thunderbolt enclosure i have, but not over USB.

how silly
