Not sure on that text. I know MVC-flashed video cards can flash some text during boot with Sierra/High Sierra. I believe it's related to APFS and it's harmless (not indicative of a real problem) but I don't know if that's the same as the text you're getting.

Maybe someone else can analyze your photo and say for sure.

Well I tried the Terminal approach and it will not accept my admin password - No I haven't made a mistake I been using it for years and I have used it thousands of time: "go figure that one" !
[doublepost=1532449821][/doublepost]I had previously a PCIe card with 2 x SSD cards configured in RAID and could not update to High Sierra, nor could I enter recovery from that card either. As you probably know High Sierra does not support RAID any longer and I assumed that this was the problem: both the update and the recovery issue. I ordered a new single (no RAID) SSD PCIe and thought this would resolve both issues. It resolved the High Sierra update but highlighted the Recovery problem. I think you are correct that this is in fact the problem.

You are aware that when you type in your password in Terminal that nothing shows up on the screen?
This is normal behavior...

Yes I am thanks. I have used Terminal several times - for instance when I created the "Install High Sierra" file on a USB - and it always worked with my password. I have no idea why it gives me this message:
"-bash: xxxxxxx: command not found"
