I am confused though. Serious question. What are the 5DS and R? Are they a science project? I don't get how they fit in now in terms of evolution of the product line.

I just don't understand why any one would buy a 5D Mark IV when their needs could be served with a 1DX Mark II. ;)

Looks like a nice camera from Canon but it just seems like Canon has their customers locked in with a lot of investment in Canon glass.

Really looking at this it's a jack of all trades $3500 camera and it is just too high in the age where Nikon has a D810 for $700 less, Sony has a mirrorless A7R2 beast for $300 less and little old Pentax actually has a full frame camera which does some things better(better sensor, higher shutter life, better weather sealing, rear pop out LCD screen, pixel shift resolution mode, external LED lighting for nighttime, In-Body image stabilization..etc) than the Mark 4 for literally half the price.

Don't get me wrong the 5D4 looks like a cool camera but when you look at the price, the competition and the fact this camera is probably going to be the placeholder until their next update for the 5D5 in probably 2020 then it starts to seem a bit disappointing. I can't blame Canon. They have it priced to get a slew of guaranteed early adopters to pay the hefty sum to help recoup r&d.

Either you opt for the higher resolution of the 5DS, or you opt for the expanded sensitivity, and the higher frame-rate of the 5DMark IV. (The 5DMarkIV also has cropped 4K video and dual pixel, but those are features than one could reasonably expect from a 5DS Mark II)

The 1DX Mark II is speedy, and sensitive and does 4k video, and on and on. But it's $6000, and is big and heavy. (1530g instead of 800g).
Canon thinks there's a market for this camera that's distinct from the 5DS/R. They could be right.

It's in my budget for some time in 2017 Hopefully, Canon will give a rebate special sometime in the first half of the year, but I'm not holding my breath. Will seel my 5D3 and maybe a lens or two to bring the cost down. Out of curiosity for those of you in the UK or AU, if you happen to travel to the US and pick one up here, do you get nailed when you get back home with additional cost?

If you don't declare it not at all.
However Canon UK would consider that a grey import and potentially not repair any issues under warranty.

We are supposed to yes. Import duty and VAT but if you are obviously using it for yourself and not selling it, then they will sometimes let it pass.

I think they have made digital cameras exempt of import duty but you do get hit for VAT. Someone sent me a used camera recently and I had to pay VAT on the declared value at 20% so you have to be careful and consider this in calculations.

It may not be a huge jump in features compared to the 5DMKIII, just as the 5DII to III was only a very modest increase in resolution, but it is a substantial upgrade if you're a 5DII owner who hasn't upgraded.

I use a 5D3 now.... and the 5D4 is very tempting. I'm deciding whether to pull the trigger on the 5D4 or to wait for the 5DS2.... :)

Sounds like GAS rather than something that is getting in your way that the 5D4 can fix....

Save your money and replace it when you NEED to then if the answer is a 5D4 you will get it cheaper and the firmware wrinkles will be hopefully ironed out. IMHO now, I say this but I get bad GAS and I am worried about what fotokina brings... :-(

Lol laughing at this one again... Yeah like why would anyone buy a BMW M4 when their needs can be met with a Lambirghini... Ha ha ha

Agreed... It is a good camera and it will sell but it is a steep price and I worry with compelling alternatives available at cheaper or at least comparable prices, will be interesting to watch how successful it is - and it will be that right? The 5d is the workhorse for pros around the world...

I hear a lot of talk about the alternative cameras...

...but it's not just about the camera it's about the whole Eco system...

Glass make a huge difference, as does all the other little things eg speedlites with built in wireless etc etc.

I remember similar things said about the mark 1 and mark 2...they still did all right ;)

That said I am I mk2 owner so it's a massive upgrade for me, if I was a mk3 owner I wouldn't be in that much of a hurry.

I will probably use this camera for at least five or six years so build quality and reliability are also important to me...

My old mk2 and me got into some scrapes together, and despite some rough treatment she is still going strong.

Waiting for the 5D MKIV kit, with the new 24-105, to place my order. In the meantime I'll keep reading about it!

The biggest problem I am finding coming from the mk 2 is that they have moved a few things about....and as I had a mk 2 for 8 years, i tend to just do things without thinking and keep coming a bit unstuck...also I can't seem to get the max buffer..I have decent cards.

Other than that its really good :)

24-70 2.8L II is superior to 24-105...take a look at how often your at 70+ and you will be surprised.

It's also about three times the price ;)

I had both (just sold the 24 105 mk1 in anticipation of getting the mk2)

Both great lenses and I found the extra reach useful, as well as the IS.

I always rated the 24-105 as a good walk around. Good range, good is, speed not great and ave IQ. Was nice and light to carry all day tho ;)

YMMV tho
