Houston (duh)
I bought this for my wife for her birthday. This morning I showed it to her. It was setting up on a stand and acting as a picture frame.

She's not technical at all. Her iPhone is almost a total waste on her, but right away, she said, "Is that the iPad?" I said, "It's a picture frame." She laughed and said, "No. That's an iPad!”

Well, long story short… she LOVED it, but then said, “Can I use it in the car while waiting for <our daughter>?”
“Um, well no. It needs wifi.”
Then she shocked me with, “Isn’t there a 3G version coming out in a few weeks?”

Haha. My non-techy wife, who struggles even using the map app on the iPhone knew all this, and she’s totally pumped abou the iPad.
I was shocked she’d care about taking it with her places and using in the car while waiting, etc.

I hope Apple takes it back without charging me a ‘restocking’ fee. I’ll return it Saturday and that will be 7 days of ownership. Anyone have experience trying to return something like this to Apple?

I am assuming they’ll be hassle-free because they seem to usually be easy to deal with. I figure if I at least just get store credit for a 3G, it won’t bother them at all.

Anyway, just thought I’d share my story.

I’m off to order 2 3G iPads now because I want one too!!

PS. This is not a knock on the wifi model. The wifi only is still awesome, and I figure for at least half of users is more than adequate. I assumed my wife would be one of those users and was wrong!
Lastly, I think we’ll ditch her iPhone and expensive data plan because she never uses any of it really other than the phone and contacts. We can do that on a regular cheap, low cost data plan phone, so in the long run, I’ll be saving money by having a 3G iPad and no iPhone. :D

Not a big deal :). 3G might be the way to go for most, I prefer the wifi only model as I don't need to be connected all the time.

i have no need for 3g in my house i have wifi and if i decide to go out i probably wont bring the ipad if anything i have my iphone

I would get the 3G version if I had a job, I would also get it cause when I go on vacation I like to camp in places away from WiFi, so 3G might come in handy. I don't see it as a waste of money, some people want to be able to be connected all the time. I think it should be included with AT&T dsl or Uverse :).

Depends on usage. I'm going to tether with MyWi from my 3GS and that will effectively accomplish the same thing :)

I doubt it'll save money because she will probably need the unlimited data plan since 250mb is nothing and that is still $30 also you'll spend $130 more on the iPad. Just jailbreak her iPhone and use mywi. That way if she doesn't have her ipad she can still have data on the iphone if she needs it. You'll have data for two devices instead of only one. I was riding around with a friend last night surfing on my iPad. I think a jailbroken iPhone 3gs may be one of the best devices in the world.

You might be able to sell on on Craigslist for a profit. Someone on another forum I visit sold theirs for $900 cash.

Why? There's plenty of 64GB in stock, even here at the Apple Store on 5th Ave. I suppose there are a lot of uniformed consumers out there...

beats me, I didn't say *I* paid $900 on craigslist

people on craigslist confuse the hell out of me

Somehow with the 3G version I see money floating by each time I use it.

I totally agree. For the one or two days a month I'll want 3G or need it, just isn't worth the $30. I still want my iphone to have a purpose. It suits my needs when I'm out of the house. Not to mention, it's much more portable :)

I'm aware of the $15 dollar per month for 250 mb of data but that is not much at all and if I'm correct if you go over it you don't even have the option to upgrade to the unlimited data a month for the extra 15 dollars but you have to either choose the $15 or $30 plan all over again. That's pretty lame if you ask me. Am I correct on this?

My advice

My advice is to (if possible) put mywi on your wife's 3g iphone, show her how to use it (it's extremely easy) - and that will solve your problem, and save you money at the same time.

I would do that if it was anybody but my wife.
She's unbelievably non-technical. That solution will result into my becoming an IT help desk with multiple calls per day. ;)

Do you have to have a jail broken iPhone for mywi?

I suspect the 30 AT&T Plan for the iPad will be over $50 after all the taxes and fees. Soon to be over $60 with USA VAT:eek:

What ever it is I want it as I need mine out in the field and am tired of parking outside the coffee shps! <vbg>

Yes your iphone has to be jailbroken. It's really an easy app to use. Basically just open the app and turn it on and the app does the rest. After that connecting the iPad is no different that connecting it to your home network. The 3g ipad was never an option for me because mywi works so well. Also people will tell you that it drains the battery even if its plugged in and I haven't found this to be true. I was riding around with a friend last night and my iphone charged while it was plugged in and using mywi.

Which also includes GPS..

My wifi ipad knows where I am

I was driving and while it did not detect my movement. When i clicked on locate me it knew exactly where i was located.

Is the agps function @ work.

Yes. So if you're like me and are running 3.1.3 on an iPhone 3GS that's never been jailbroken before, Mywi's is apparently not possible today.

I have a co-worker that uses it. His feedback is that Mywi kills the iPhone 3GS battery quickly. He'll use it at lunch for about 45 minutes to surf from his iPad and says it uses about 50% of his battery. Don't know if that's typical or not, but it's not giving me a warm fuzzy. :(

I suspect the 30 AT&T Plan for the iPad will be over $50 after all the taxes and fees.
My $90 iPhone bill only has $4.80 in fees and taxes. lol

I'm happy to have a WiFi only iPad, battery life is the maximum it will be (3G iPad will be less and in certain conditions perhaps a lot less). I'm waiting on the HTC Evo 4G on Sprint which comes with hotspot functionality for up to 8 devices at 4G (DSL) speeds. This way I pay one fee to Sprint and I can tether up to 8 devices including my iPad, Macbook and whatever else I'll buy. :)
