That's what I am saying. There needs to be a setting in iOS to turn off auto-rotation on the homescreen.
It won’t rotate even if auto rotation is on.

Are you sure? I always hated that the Plus models rotated.
The only thing I don't like about the larger versions, is that there is no way to stop the homescreen from going into landscape mode when you rotate it. (At least I don't think so.) Should have the option to turn that off in the settings.
Well, fortunately for you with the XS Max there is no landscape home screen.
I am considering one of these two phones myself: Xs or Xs Max. Ease of use is important to me. This is how I use my phone:
1. Photography
2. Texting
3. Browsing web
4. Google maps
No games, no movies, no social media.
I currently have the x and ordered the max. Never had a plus phone before but I started using my iPad mini less and less and probably the max will eliminate its use completely. If it feels too big for a phone though I’ll return and go to the xs.

And remember, the X does NOT have a small screen.. it’s actually bigger than the “plus” phones they had since you don’t have the bezels.XS sounds like the right phone if you don't want the larger screen to be able to check out photos better.
