how come there aren't any rumors around the iMac update?
unlike any other apple product (MBP, iPhone, iPad) that gets tons of rumors for at least 2 months before the update.

LOL! some people make me laugh! all they are waiting for is the "new" CPU, which 99% of them won't benefit at all.

Well, but to be fair, some of us use these machines in businesses that actually do utilize the CPU, and it's really something to look forward to in that case.

no one cares about iMacs anymore lol - only rumor that's around right now, is that an update is due soon

that's why I sair 99% ;)

Just a Guess due to Amazon

I just looked at Amazon and see that the iMac's on there a lot of them are now showing In RED a stock Qty. and "Order Soon"

Gives a Feeling that the Wait wont be that much longer! But who know!

before I only saw that on one model and now I see that on a bunch of models.

Time will Tell

Also BestBuy out

Best Buy is also Out of the i5 27" iMac's online and in my local stores.

I have looked on both amazon.com & co.uk - neither is showing stock in red :S

It is here when I look. Seems that it is on the 27" i7's

This is copyed from it! But would be in red!
"Only 8 left in stock--order soon."

Some had 10 and some had only 2

ok, I see that. These are not sold by amazon, therefore I wouldn't really look at that.

Amazon UK now seems to be out of stock on some models (note the "More Buying Options" on the right-hand side): "Usually dispatched within 1 to 3 months." Those still on sale are from third-party sellers (as cinek said).

All that said, however, Amazon US seems to have plenty still in stock, so I don't think it's worth getting our hopes up yet. :(

Maya

Hi all!

I'm sorry to cut into this thread... I'm just another weak soul longing for an iMac... ;)

And since I don't really NEED it per se (I have my MacBook Pro), I'm thinking I'll probably have to suck it up and wait... ;)

BUT then I'm thinking... Will I even benefit from the upgrade? I know it's probably hard to tell, but maybe you could still give me some advice?
The heaviest stuff I'll be doing on it, will be 3D animating in Maya... I most likely won't be doing much rendering (instead playblast), but still... You just always want the biggest and baddest, just to be on the safe side, right? Or?

What do you think?

What to do!

I cant tell you what to do. Yes todays computers would work for you just fine. I can tell you what I am thinking and that might help you.

I used to build my own pc and upgrade all the time. I am looking to go mac and basicly know what I buy really is not upgradeable. For that I want the Fastest CPU at time of buying so that I know I can at least get 3-5 years out of it. Plus it is hard for me to spend $2000 + on a System with a CPU that in it's own way is old just due to the PC World already has the Sandy Bridge CPU.

As for thunderbolt, It is new and Really doesnt have any use but for adding Hard drives at this point (Soon). Being I come from pc's where I was able to add hard drives at will and not lose any speed due to Firewire or USB. Thunderbolt does solve that problem being that this a All in One system. and now external HD will be as fast or even faster. This is Good if you use a lot of Hard drive Space and the internal drive wont be unuff. I always felt the FW800 was still SLOW for Video editting and such but it was what it was and the only option to this point.

Besides thoes two item for me. The system that are out now I would have bought already if it wasnt for the fact that INTEL already has released the i7-2XXX Chips. so this is not a rip on the current systems just a matter for me on spending $2000+ on somthing in a way that is older than other items on the market already.

I hope this helps you.

wait wait wait. here is why. the iMac has an impossible to access internal hdd. (not really but very hard slow replacement for the diy guy) . So if your internal dies you have no fast and easy by pass. FW800 will bypass but kind of slow. T-bolt should allow a fast external boot system. Just as fast actually faster then the internal drive. So say you wait and you don't want the new t-bolt the 2010 will sell at a close out price and you will save a few hundred. If you are really lucky the iMac will have lion osx so you will save more. I would give it til June/July.

I don't agree with you when you say it's a whole new CPU. Maybe the tech on paper is new, but the speed advantage of an i7 2,93 ghz Quad core I just bought and the new Sandy bridge i7 quite frankly IS NOT that big of a step in terms of speed gain. I also build pc's and frankly I would have stayed with my i7 920 if not for SATA 3. That's the only real advantage where you will see the real benefits of the new chipset.

You will not see real CPU and ram speed gains before Ivy Bridge is here in late 2011 early 2012 in my honest opinion. I'm going from triple channel ram to dual channel with Sandy bridge. This is not what I call groundbreaking new technology.

Wait for Ivy bridge and X68 chipsets, this is the real upgrade to X58 - not p67 to be honest.

The new i7 2600k runs at 3.4 GHz and frankly is not that much different from an i7 970 cpu. Both are quad core and the i7 2600k is frankly just a minor upgrade in speed, nothing more.

Only SATA 3 makes Sandy bridge interesting in my view.
Wait for Ivy Bridge !!!

Ivy Bridge won't be about performance, it'll be about the same performance with less power and heat...

Not that big step? I'd say huge step.

However... programming, the web and e-mails isn't going to need a faster CPU... the iMac will last you 4-5 years if that's your usage.

I do tons of 1080p conversions using handbrake and my bottleneck in performancebis 100% on the CPU side. I'm guessing there are a lot of folks out there thatbwill benefit from the CPU bump. Granted not everyone but a lot more than 1%. Especially when you're talking about people in these rooms targeting a desktop purchase at this price point.

Thank you, Scott and Phillip!

I think I'd better wait then... That way, I'll lessen the pain of me kicking myself later on... ;)
