Yes I know, MR threw a barf and was giving me no editor box for a while, thats the result, I've reported it to them.

Now its back...I don't use tethered... :-(
I was just kidding. I figure that (or similar) was the case. ;)

I am going to a Phase One demo tomorrow. I hope that they will have the XF camera tethered to C1P so I see it firsthand. Will report back soon. :)

Long story short, I missed the Digital Transitions (Phase One reseller) P1 XF One launch in Los Angeles at the beginning of the month so I made the trek to San Francisco to see the NorCal launch/demo. The camera was late (they shipped it UPS!) In the meantime, there was a (Mamiya body-based) 645DF+ and the new Schneider Kreuznach 35mm LS f/3.5 to play around with. The camera arrived after about an hour, and it was well worth the wait. From where I sit, it was a bit surreal holding a camera that costs a lot more than the average car. Compared to the 645DF+, the XF is more solid and much better integrated with the P1 backs. It is physically large, and relatively heavy. I know most will use it on sticks or a stand, but the grip is comfortable enough for extended handheld use. Unfortunately, the camera was not tethered, but I will try to get that arranged when the rep comes to LA next month.

They didn't really talk about C1P too much as it was the launch for the XF, but they were able to address a few questions I had. The rep did state that each 8.x release will bring new features to the market. Camera support is growing as fast as the manufacturer SDK's are made available to Phase One. "Reading" between the lines, it seemed that Phase One was also very receptive to customer input (both camera and C1P) and being a smaller company, it seemed that the deployment would be faster. Looks like I know what my next software purchase will be, LOL. Admittedly, C1P's Fuji RAF treatment already had me more than interested. Now I need to somehow convince my better half to let me get a XF One. ;)

How is the compatibility of the new MacBook Pro 15 (Mid 2015) with the dGPU R9 370MX? will Capture One fully leverage it's power via Open CL?

Check the C1 forums as there's discussion there and obviously more users. I know the opinions for my 3.0 13" rMBP is leave it off. I believe this applied to the 15" as well but not sure.

Update from me...

I've been travelling for the last couple of months so I've been taking a lot of photos, but not working on any. When I got back last week, I tried out Adobe Lightroom CC 2015 (it's available at no charge as part of my work CC subscription).

The only thing I'm envious of, is the performance. On my 4K screen, LR is lightning quick compared to C1. Even when C1 is running properly. I say that because, sometimes when I start C1 (8.3.1 on 10.10.4) lately, it's unbelievably sluggish (more so than usual) and when I checked with Activity Monitor, I've noticed it using 125% CPU even when it's doing nothing at all (I just let the C1 app sit idle). A restart of the app will usually fix it.

I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed this?

I'm still blown away by the image quality, particularly the initial sharpness and lack of noise. C1 definitely has a significant advantage over LR here. In fact, I find it hard to replicate the initial image quality even making adjustments in LR... the sharpness settings in LR only exaggerate any noise. Whatever C1 is doing to provide sharp noise free images right out of the gate is impressive. I also like C1's Clarity and Structure controls much better than LR's equivalent. And I prefer the shadow and highlight adjustments in C1 as well, they just seem more refined, resulting in a better look.

So while I love C1, I really hope that Phase One invests in performance... that's one key area they lag behind the competition in my testing.

Hiya, firstly, that little problem we spoke about is sorted (my little problem obviously) yipppeeeee

As I can now load my images C1 has been doing its stuff and I gotta say it is doing ti smooth as butter (not my favourite simile). 8.3.1.16 is running on 10.10.4 without a glitch on anything I do anyway.

C1 is making me reconsider my direction with photographs. PS5 was my main toll for image presentation but now i look back it is almost like I was trying to hide the original; to give it something I felt was lacking.
When I open a group of recent images I really do get the urge to leave well alone. My photographic skills are on the wanes I know I've not become a 'Bailey' or 'Donovan' over night.;)

Even stuff I took 5-10 years ago looks better just printed directly from C1.

You know what? I actually think I may be getting a bit of satisfaction out of taking pictures again.

Anyway not slowdown probe. here, let us know if you find the cure?

Regards

Sharkey

Sounds like Phase One needs to do like Adobe did for LR 6/CC.....do only optimized for 64bit OS and use the GPU. Those two together made a big difference in LR 6/CC.

If Phase One and Adobe would just use Metal as the graphics platform for OS 10.11 versions....then we could see some more serious performance increases.

Agreed. Interestingly both Aperture and now LR6 use OpenGL, while as far as I know, C1 is using OpenCL. I've yet to see any benefit from turning it on in C1 though. The preview refresh response in Aperture (and Photos) and LR 6 make C1 look like a dog in comparison (on high res screens) so I must wonder if the framework being used is part of it. Metal might be the answer, but probably only if the devs utilize it properly. I also wonder how much Phase Ones support for Windows impacts performance on Macs be forcing compromises somewhere.

Anyway... I keep hoping Phase One will make performance a serious priority soon.

I'd rather have solid demosaicing than speed. I use LR for DAM and C1 in Sessions for develop. Once C1 puts some capability in its Catalog side, I'm there all the way.

So, I just made the switch from LR and I am floored how much time is shaved off my workflow. When it comes to printing - select whatever run you want, hit print and it will allow you to print the entire run at once as single prints or contact sheets with almost unlimited options.

Another bonus that Capture One doesn't advertise is they do offer student pricing. I picked up my copy for $150 from https://captureintegration.com/download-archive/ based out of Atlanta.

With LR I use Perfect Photo Suite as my main plugin. When PPS finishes with an image it sends back a Smart Photo PSD format to LR. That preserves all the individual editing layers and adjustments. So if I want to re edit an image, I can do so by opening and modifying any of the individual adjustments. That is not possible if you are using something like a TIFF format image between a plugin and C1P. So if you want to go C1P, makes sure you are happy with the limitations of using plugins with it.
