But if it works as reliably as ApplePay - then it would be an issue. I find ApplePay works first time maybe 75% of time - otherwise several attempts needed.
Wonder if car manufactures will charge or make this an option.

Also, I live in Maine, so in winter i will have to "unwrap" to get to my phone and then use it. Now with face masks adds another issue with activate and have to press code which isn't easy in gloves.

Time will tell and we will see

Yeah, good points. Imagine being caught in a rainstorm or freezing temps. You've got to wait, pull out your phone, unlock it, try it again because it didn't unlock the first time, wait, unlock the car, get it without dropping your phone. That is, unless it works like the Tesla where you don't need to take out your phone.

I'd disagree. I've had a Tesla Model 3 now for 2 years and the lack of a FOB or key has been great. One less thing to lose track of or carry. The secondary key being a card that fits in my wallet makes it easy if I ever valet. For me, the phone as key with Tesla always worked and unlike CarKey (currently), my phone stays in my pocket at all times and I can just enter my car and go. No need to put the phone anywhere.

It was a problem I didn't know I had and know now I wouldn't want to go back to a physical key for my car.

Yeah, like he said, if it weren't better, this guy would want his physical key back. He doesn't, so it's better. The problem is Tesla and Apple CarKey seem to have two different implementations. Maybe Apple's will evolve.

Apple's tech will evolve next year when they get Ultra Wide Band supported in the standards body and manufacturers adopt it. Then, you won't need to take your phone out of pocket or place it in the charger in the car.

I won’t be able to use this until it supports Bluetooth anyway. But hoping the valet has an iPhone... that’s sort of iffy.

Carkey is the latest example of a solution in search of a problem.

We solved keys with fobs. You don’t need to even pull them out of your pocket; hand on handle to unlock, push button to start, etc.

Its easy to hand off, and if it dies, each car has a backup method of unlocking and starting.

Relying on a phone creates more inconvenience and adds more points of failure to a pretty well established model.

Comon! KeyFobs are so klunky. If I could leave it at home, I will be happy.

I would much rather have my phone and a slim single key that can be put in my wallet if in case my phone does not work.
