Just yesterday I was able to make all features (on a Mac) work on a Hackintosh with Ryzen and Core i9

I will sell my Akitio Node and maybe even the Mac Mini 2018
I'm about 90% of the way there myself. Looks like the Aorus Extreme has 2 TB3 ports and my local Microcenter has it in stock...

What, both at once? In the same computer?

That's some real frankensteins monster **** right there.

COUGAR GEMINI X

The Ryzen and Intel PCs I already had here and didn't have to spend anything but time to get everything working

Putting it all together: eGPU and a bunch of Thunderbolt 3 adapters for whatever it is, ends up getting the same mess on the table compared to conventional desktops

Obviously the problem is in the constant and unnecessary update of Mac Mini 2018 Boot Rom and not in macOS

I changed windows with Mac only for minimal size and silence of Mac mini.
Every case you buy for desktop is 3-4x Mac mini’s size . With thunder hub I take less space of my old pc.
The only advantage of the desktop is only in some more USB ports but after Mac mini win .

Desktop years ago was superior than Mac for the possibility of change motherboard and other hardware.
My old desktop has 10 years and I can’t able to upgrade because everything is changed in the market (new cpu, ram etc...)and for make an upgrade i need buy all new component =new desktop= expensive similar to Mac mini

EDIT AFER LAST UPGRADE:
My Mac mini make me black screen or withe screen of death after restart/shutdown.
The only solution at moment is duplicate monitor and use Mac mini hdmi+ egpu display port.
My ogpu is sonnet 350+rx580

I wonder temporarily if a HDMI switch is an option to change sources from back of the Mini to back of the card.

So are you saying that if I have the integrated graphics connected to a 2nd monitor along with the eGPU connected to the 1st, the boot process will still work?

Yes i tried .
If you connect only egpu-> black/white screen of death
If you connect both output (egpu and integrated) -> mac start normally without problems

You don’t need two monitors , the important that you connect both output .
I have a dell U2711 with the integrated with hdmi and the egpu with display port.

Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a shot when I get home tonight and provide an update.

This talk of 580s having issues in Catalina is depressing. I wonder what the heck happened, since I did do some testing with 10.15.0 Beta 6 (the one that included the Boot ROM updates) and the Blackmagic 580 which worked fine then. Jebus Apple, get a better test matrix here, Polaris isn't that old (yet).

Generally. Or you can do what I do and hide the eGPU case under the desk and out of sight.

Yeah. My gaming PC is in a small 12.7L case (NCase M1), and it's still huge compared to the Mac mini, even on top of a USB hub for the ports and SD Card reader, and an external Blu-Ray drive. Smaller than my eGPU though, but as I said, I can hide that, and I do. The M1 demands more of a footprint on my desk than the Mini does, and I can slide the mini under my monitor this way, which is a lot harder with the NCase M1.

Which eGPU enclosure are you using?

Which version of the boot ROM does your system have?

I'm using a stock Sonnet 550W enclosure, with an active 2M cable so it can sit under the desk.

Boot ROM Version: 1037.60.58.0.0 (iBridge: 17.16.12551.0.0,0)

My Boot ROM is also 1037.60.58.0.0 (iBridge: 17.16.12551.0.0,0).

I had the Vega in an Akito Node, but I also have an OWC Mercury Helios, which I believe is a rebadged Sonnet. I can give that a try tonight.

My setup is also a bit weird, which is why I'm surprised it's stable for me when it isn't for other folks. I'm running an UW through a DisplayPort passive switch at 120Hz 10-bit color which requires DisplayPort 1.4, which the switch doesn't officially support (but since it's passive, does it know the difference?). Somehow it's all been fine?

I just tried this and it works. One monitor is connected via the internal HDMI, the other monitor is connected to the Vega64 via DisplayPort. The Vega resides in my OWC Mercury Helios FX.

I guess this sorta makes sense.....a MacBook Pro would be similar (because of the built-in display).

Looks like I'm back in business. I owe you one Macccotto.

I wonder if a dummy HDMI plug works as well?

I don't think so. What happens in the 2 monitor scenario is, that the login screen is displayed on the monitor, which is connected to the integrated GPU. Therefore you'll always see the login screen (not like in the "1 monitor connected to eGPU" case, where you could face black screens).

I don't have a 2nd monitor so I can't test this myself. Maybe @melvinlusk can answer this: Is the monitor, which is connected to the eGPU behaving completely normal in the 2 monitor setup? Or is it blacking out occasionally during login and then properly initialized after the login was executed on the 1st (integrated) GPU monitor?

It blacks out during login.

I thought the well-known solution to the problem was to connect one display to the mini via HDMI and the egpu by DP, and when you reboot, use the displays input switcher to swap to HDMI. After login, switch it back.

for two displays obviously do that with just one and connect the other just to the egpu.

I remember someone described this setup back when the mini came out and the issue of egpu login screens first arose.

Also, do you have FileVault enabled? I’m wondering if that’s maybe at play here?

I was thinking of getting a BlackMagic eGPU 580 to power my 24" LG UltraFine monitor from my Mac mini 2018, but looks like I could be heading for a world of hurt?
