I'd recommend a screensver to activate after 15-30 of idleing to reduce the "burn" :)

Oh, I do use a screensaver after 15 minutes.

Another thing, none of my other Macs have had this issue. Why does this one? If it's image persistence (which I doubt based on the reasons in my last post), then why did it not happen to my previous Macs which I used exactly the same way?

Whatta hell? If i'm right you guys are talkinga about "faint" lines that are COMPLETE NORMAL! I bet what you guys are talking about are normal LCD BURNING when you have static picture long enough on the screen. Example browser window or some other stuff. Dock icons are good example. This "burn in" is nothing serious and it will totally fade away once your display has been turned off for some time or the picture is changed!

This "burn in" was seen already on the last Alu cinema displays ...

This is so funny, because if you turn off your mac to ship it in, of course they cant see the lines because it will fade away during that time. Electric charge or "memory" of the lcd crystal has gone way :D
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_persistence
None of my Macs have this issue except for my iMac 24". Apple recognized it as a defect in the LCD display and replaced it with one that does not have the problem. I'm also pretty sure it's heat related, because my iMac only had the issue when it was warmed up.

Now to address the next problem, dust behind the glass panel... :(

i know they have replaced it before, but LCD replacment is the best option. then afterwards sell it and get a new one. a mac book pro or something. let it be someone elses problem

Maybe Not!

I just now joined the forum and this is the first message thread I have visited.

And I'm bummed!

I've been a lifetime PC user and I was just about to make the big move and to pull the trigger on a fully loaded 24" iMAC.

Now I am not too sure!

Dont worry. There are always bad lemons, but remember, usually only people who have bad machines writes here. Its more common to get good machine than a bad one. You can always replace it if needed. Pull the trigger man!

I don't blame you. With the experience I've had here, I'm considering calling off my next Apple purchase (an MBP) and getting something else.

As for the other poster who is stating there are always lemons, keep in mind that this is my 2nd machine.

Ludicrous thread anyway. Lemons exist but to suggest that people don't buy 24 inch iMacs because of it is odd. It's understandable though, I accept, as getting a lemon will leave a sour taste in one's mouth, brand wise.

Two lemons in a row, not just one. And this seems to be a common issue.

At least they are still working on fixing it.

I think it is Apple's unwritten policy to get at least two repair attempts (three units) before replacement and I know think people with bad laptops have gone more than that.

Sounds like a case of bad pixels, which are fairly common on a lot of LCD screens. Bit of advice, after purchasing any kind of LCD screen or computer with one, put up a completely white background on your screen (and a black one too for that matter), and look for any pixels that are out of place. If you find one, get the screen replaced immediately. Bad pixels have tendency to completely wipe out that entire line of pixels and sometimes the other lines near it.

If it truly was a common issue, they would have made a recall. Yet Apple manage to shift hundreds of thousands of these every quarter with a very low failure rate. A few bad stories on a forum doesn't indicate a massive issue with a line of products.

I do understand that you are frustrated, but it is Apple's legal obligation to fix any faults with their products within the warranty period, so keep on taking it back to them until you are satisfied. If your third computer is a dud, then you can start asking for refunds.

i agree. the most you can do right now is get another one. by this time im sure they have solved it. My Church uses one for worship so we have alot running on it. we never have this problem

One incident CAN make you scared, but I bought 300 of them this past summer. They have been in continuous use since August 16th and not one has the issue.

Maybe so, but from the sound of it it does take a lot for this issue to happen (such as running Crysis) and I'm guessing the reason for a lack of recall is just that most people haven't noticed the problem due to them not putting enough load on the machine of simply because well, from the look of the pictures the lines aren't too noticeable unless you are a nerd (like all of us on MacRumors :p).

i have two 24 inch alum iMacs

one at work i got in the summer of 2007 - no problems works fine

i got one to work on from home, white blotches at bottom of screen when in front row... so theyre sending me another one.

now im like, crap maybe i should just keep the one i have at home, at least it doesnt have massive pixels outages like above, but then again in 2 months it might or the new one might?

i think we need to just relax and realize its a computer and apple is one of the best companies out there with customer service. :) dont worry, it will get worked out oranges! don't obsess over it, i should know, im OCD to the max.

but just pray you'll get a good one and let go, thats all we can do in this life besides calling and going in - im sure you'll get a good one or one thats fixed one of these times. hang in there :)
