Withings today announced the launch of a new smart scale, the Body Scan, which is designed to track all kinds of health-related metrics. It monitors segmental body composition, weight, heart rate, and vascular age, plus it can assess nerve activity and heart rhythm using a 6-lead ECG.

Body Scan features a tempered glass platform with a retractable handle. It is equipped with four weight sensors and 14 ITP electrodes, along with four stainless steel electrodes in the handle for the ECG and body composition analysis functionality. A built-in battery lasts for a year before needing to be recharged, and health metrics are displayed on a 3.2-inch color LCD screen.

According to Withings, the Body Scan scale is able to provide precise weight measurements in addition to using multi-frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis to measure overall body composition, providing readings on whole-body fat, water percentage, visceral fat, muscle mass, bone mass, and extra cellular and intracellular water. It's also able to provide readings for body parts that include the torso, arms, and legs.

The Body Scan is able to track sweat gland activity in the feet and it will offer a daily assessment of small nerve activity, plus it can determine vascular age through cardiovascular measurements to give users an idea of their arterial health. For the ECG function, Body Scan can detect arrhythmias using two electrodes located on each side of the handle and one in the base of the scale.

Withings is pairing the Body Scan's health monitoring features with access to coaching, clinical specialists, and holistic plans to reach health goals through the Withings health and wellness programs, with a three-month free subscription included.

Withings is planning to launch the Body Scan scale in the second half of 2022 following FDA clearance. It will be priced at $299.95.

You lost me at $300
Wait for Black Friday 2022 and it will probably be <$200 ;)

Seriously - I love my Withings body composition scale and use it daily. It's been a very small investment in tracking and improving my health/fitness. I've gotten a lot more fitness value out of it than the Apple Watch, which I now only use in the gym.

I will be upgrading.

I bought the original Withings Body Scale in 2012 and have been tracking my weight.

The interesting thing I noticed is when you step on the scale every morning at the same time, you can directly correlate to what you had to eat the previous day. I stopped eating processed foods in 2014 and my weight dropped like a rock without stepping in a gym or exercising.

My employer sponsored health incentives has rewards for simply syncing Apple Health data, up to $600 per year. Paid for itself several times over.

I'm 38 and I've never bought a scale... I don't care about some arbitrary number that may fluctuate a little here and there.

I guess that's one of the many perks that come with not making terrible food choices.

Weight is more than food choices. As you age your metabolism changes and what you eat today that keeps a static weight could well end up making you overweight if kept unchecked later on in life.

At 38 you’re at the time you do need to care about this.

I would be interested to hear how reviews of this end up being. There have been other scales with the pull-up handles for years now so I don't know what Withings thinks it is accomplishing, but if it is more accurate than past scales of this type that would be helpful. That said, as a long time Withings scale owner, it got notoriously frustrating when the scale would randomly, autonomously change units and occasional syncing/account issues. So bad that I eventually switched to a $30 Wyze scale that tells me the exact same information with the exact same accuracy and was 1/3-1/5 the price. I had previously liked Withings, and am still open to this, but at $279 it better be ****ing amazing.

Hopefully it’s more accurate than their blood pressure cuff. That piece of junk reads about 30 points higher than it should.

Love my current Body Cardio, main thing it’s missing is upper body scanning so I’m super excited for this to launch in Aus. I’ve lost 15kg and my misses lost 20kg through COVID. Both looking to increase muscle now and love how this tracks your full body composition, so when you add weight but lose body fat you’re not stressing about adding the kg’s!

So you don’t care about scales, but you willingly clicked on an article about a scale to tell us that you don’t like scales? Lol ok. Cool story bro

I believe I have the Body+ (which replaced once from 2013) and its been great. While my current scale doesn't provide the same level of detail, the body comp info is pretty much on point when I compare to my dexa scans. People may scoff at the $300 price but if it offers a similar level of visibility as the dexa scans, then this will be SAVING me money.

My metabolism changed 10 years ago. Food quality & quantity is everything. You can't gain weight on a calorie deficit and you can't lose weight on a calorie surplus. It's not hard to figure out the movement to intake ratio if you apply some effort. The amount of misinformation on diets these days is incredible.

I don't need a scale to see if my belly is getting larger.

Sounds pretty cool, expensive, but cool. Right now I’ve just been using my old Fitbit Aria 2.

How much of this data is supposed to sync with the Health app? Hopefully this doesn’t phone home with your private info either.

Just like the bpm they are still waiting for clearance on. Live their products but they are super ambitious on release dates. The bpm has been waiting for years. It’s only gotten worse with covid since the FDA is probably covid focused right now.
