What are the possibilities? Buy now or is one of the two aspects expected next year?

Improved display?

iMacs already have LED IPS panels, practically the best type you can buy.

Maybe you should define "improved display" -- because right now Im not sure how they can be much better.

No one of us knows. It might happen, but it also may not.
Other than that: We live in the present, not some undefined time in the future...and as others have said before me: if you always wait for the best you will wait forever as technology is evolving. Buy now if you have the money and want a great computer. Wait if you don't need one for about a year, and see what happens.

I appreciate that, but considering we haven't had a display nor resolution bump this year, what makes it improbable next year?

The redesign was back in 09 so it'd be worth wondering whether 2012 could be the year for a change.

PLS stands for Plane to Line Switching, which helps Samsung deliver some pretty spectacular viewing angles -- even better than the already stellar ones you'll find on IPS panels -- while also improving screen brightness by a reported 10 percent. The target market for Super PLS displays will be smartphones and tablets

Doesn't exactly sound like what we need in iMacs.

Screen brightness is fine (if not too high), and do people generally use anything much wider than about a 90-degree viewing angle? IPS goes well beyond that.

There are definitely better monitors out there today than the one in the iMac, but you're talking about serious amounts of money that the vast majority of iMac purchasers won't be interested in spending.

PLS provides 178° viewing angles (the same as IPS) and provides better colour accuracy than IPS. Another advantage, the anti glare coating is not as harsh as on matte IPS panels, plus they require less power than IPS panels.

Check the previous of the Samsung SA850, which is rumoured to be released this summer. Very interesting monitor and with 2560x1440 at 27" definitely an option for the iMac.

Why would they change one of the best displays, and the currently highest resolution? You make it sound like such changes are mandatory.

Wait Until The Redesign This Fall

iMac's are on a 2 year total redesign cycle.

White G5 iMac debuted 2005 + 2 speed bumps

1st Aluminum iMacs debuted Fall 2007 + 2 speed bumps

Current iMacs debuted Fall 2009 + 2 speed bumps

New redesigned iMacs release this Fall 2011

1. Obviously the display will be MUCH better. Think Retina ;) There's a reason why Lion already has Retina support built in... because we WILL be needing it.

2. The cycle never changes. It is new release with 2 speed bumps in between and then the next release.

Personally I think the huge improvement in the display alone is well worth the wait of a few months. Just like the Retina iPad 3 will be a huge jump from the iPad 2.

IMO the 1440p on the current 27" might already be too much for most people. I guess they could go up to 30" iMac or an option for Matte display.

Actually, the G5 iMac debuted in 2004. It was redesigned after only one speed bump. And you forgot the plastic intel iMacs, released 2006 with the same design as the G5 iSight imac. The plastic intels only had one speed bump.

I very much doubt they will put retina displays in iMacs this year. No mainstream video card supports a resolution of 5120x2880.

I believe we are some time away from a 30", if Apple ever does one. They want to maintain pricing levels - most consumers feel they are already overpriced. They would increase up the price of the Cinema Display and the new 30" iMac (likely discontinuing previous 27" models) by anywhere from $300-500, based on how much these displays currently go for, retail.

Plus, in the history of the iMac (at least the last few updates), they have kept the display proportions the same across the line, 16:10 to 16:9. If they were to introduce a 30", they would need to bring back a 24", which would likely be more expensive than their 21.5".

4 months between mid-June (SSD ship date) and mid-October for a complete refresh/new design? I'd say a re-design in 2012 is more likely, as Ivy Bridge might not be available in high enough quantities yet/not released.

Nicely put, but I'm a little hasy on why an upgraded IMac in may would be redesigned and upgraded again so soon in fall of the same year?

Oh god no... not this again. Look, the problem with Retina displays on iMac is much the same as Retina on iPad only much, much worse. First you've got the cost issue, but let's ignore that for the time being and assume Apple can chuck enough money at it and buy in big enough quantity to make the maths work somehow.

Let's assume a 'Retina' display for iMac's is... what, double the resolution of the current models? Does that seem fair? So for a 21" iMac you're looking at 3,840 x 2,040. Where in the name of all that's holy are you going to find a graphics card that'll run that AND fit in the iMac case AND not cook itself? And bear in mind it's not enough just to run the desktop at that resolution, you need to get decent games performance as well.

Sorry but I don't believe the Retina iMac rumours for a second, it just doesn't make sense. There's no real reason to do it on desktops, there are a large number of technical issues and it'd push the price of iMac's to ridiculous levels. Now if someone said that Apple might be working on a >27" Cinema Display with a ridiculous resolution for professional use, THAT might make a lot of sense....

Oh and surely the iPhone 5 has shown the danger of assuming that prior upgrade cycles will always apply to future products? Apple will redesign when they have something better than the current design and when they can turn it into a solid selling point AND when it fits into the technology cycle.

The graphics card should be fine at that resolution for everything but gaming, which you can run at half that resolution and it'll look identical to a regular 1080p iMac. I don't expect retina iMacs for a fair while though.

Oh dear - the latest iMacs have just been released and some simply have to try to discuss next years model!

Nothing better to do or contribute? :)

The general consensus is that a redesign and/or major upgrade is on the cards. Why invest now if either or both of those occur perhaps as early as fall? Even if it's in 2012, no big deal for me waiting less than a year for a major revamp and not just internal hardware bumps. Be aware, I will be investing a lot of money on a 27" ultimate so of course I would preferably like the latest, major refreshed iMac which will serve me for years to come.

If you had the slightest common sense you would of understood perfectly where I'm coming from. :)

I think that's partially why they're moving to extra high res icons, but we should expect these things "down the line".

If your waiting for the next great update, you'll be waiting forever due to you expectations.
