1. Obviously the display will be MUCH better. Think Retina ;) There's a reason why Lion already has Retina support built in... because we WILL be needing it.

1. What is "Retina support"?
2. Are you talking about the 3200x2000 wallpapers?
3. Retina displays would require resolution independence (which Lion doesn't have unless I missed something in my developer preview). Without it, there is absolutely, 100%, NO way for a retina display in any of Apple's computers.

The general consensus is that a redesign and/or major upgrade is on the cards. Why invest now if either or both of those occur perhaps as early as fall? Even if it's in 2012, no big deal for me waiting less than a year for a major revamp and not just internal hardware bumps. Be aware, I will be investing a lot of money on a 27" ultimate so of course I would preferably like the latest, major refreshed iMac which will serve me for years to come.

If you had the slightest common sense you would of understood perfectly where I'm coming from. :)

Other than Ivy bridge, what are you looking for.

My money is on a major revise of the MBP in 2012...They need to get a better thermal design and maybe something more durable than Aluminum.

Not sure what more "needs" to be done on the iMac...I'm sure one will come (whether refresh or evolution in 2012), but it seems less of an immediate need than the MBP.

Sure, they could bump resolutions, but how would real world usage vary "today"?

It's kind of like Tb...they can add stuff like that but until the foundation is in place to take advantage, it's just a spec.

I'm looking for either a redesign or resolution bump along with internal upgrades. Retina is too much to ask for I think, but there is no doubt in my mind increasing the current resolution is feasible, whether it be a minor or significant increase. At the same time, I know Apple are looking into touch sensitive bezels and I can certainly see that make its way into the imac. They've put to rest the idea of a touchscreen iMac for now but not a touch sensitive bezel (which would be great for an abundance of reasons and adds much more practicality).

It's been awhile since the last redesign, by next year it just seems inevitable. Like you've said, the MBP is also certainly going to be revamped next year and 2012 just appears to be the year for major changes across numerous apple products (Iphone, Ipad, MBP) and I think the iMac is in line with those changes.

Since when?

Then why not wait until 2013 for an even more up to date model? ;)

Since when?

In 2012 it will be 3 years nearing on 4 since the last redesign. Others seem to agree a change is fortuitous.

Since you have trouble understanding what is written and/or purposely disregard my points, I don't expect a major revamp in 2013. Rather, I expect it in 2012. I've said I wanted a redesign and/or increased resolution. And 2012 falls in line with the other much anticipated changes coming to the other big apple products. Let's see if you get it this time. :)

On one hand, I would think it makes sense to stagger releases, just so you're not busting through "evolutionary" products in one calendar or fiscal year.

Then again, the two share more in common than most desktop and laptop lines, down to the fab materials (aluminum).

When they change the casings on the MBP, they will probably do the same for the iMacs (thinking as I type), to help with economies of scale for the raw materials and fab processes.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a video/visual nut and want as high a resolution and intricate a display that I can get, but until the next OS and the ultra high res icons...etc in place to take advantage of it (not to mention apps that support it), there's no business reason to adopt or add it.......yet.

I got to say though, this type of discussion is NOT helping me "bite the bullet" and order the machine I've been planning (originally a MBP but due to the refresh, I'm leaning to an iMac).

What are the possibilities? Buy now or is one of the two aspects expected next year?

If you need/want a new computer now, buy now. My answer on that will never change. Otherwise, there is always something new coming, so you'll always be waiting.

I know in 12 to 16 months there'll be 8-core CPUs and larger SSDs for the same price. I still decided to buy now (and am waiting for it, since I started the 2011 iMac SSD Shipment Tracker).

To sum all the craziness of this thread up and answer it:

-Will there be an iMac next year? YES, BUT NOT THIS FALL

-Will it be redesigned? No one knows, we'll see.

-Will the redesign change the screen and or resolution? If there is a redesign then there is a slight chance but doesnt have to be. I dont think so, personally.

i guess there is no chance for a Matte option ever again on Mac's , sad but most are happy with those mirrors on their desk , so there is no need for apple to ever offer a matte display which you could use in a bright light flooded room again
so at least for matte display option its a definite NO for 2012

Having 'retina' displays on the iMac is totally dependent on two things:

1. A manufacturer actually selling such a display
2. Waiting for them to become affordable so new 27in iMacs don't cost $5k each.

Our time has passed (in regards to matte screens) and we all need to embrace it. That's why I bought a Mac Pro to go along with my large NEC display.

Honestly the next upgrade, if I don't want another tower, will just be a 17in MBP/antiglare that I hook up to this display while at home.
