Slim to none. Otherwise they would have announced with the new 9.7" iPad back in March (and when the gave the iPad mini 4 a bump)

at one time the ipad mini was my favorite tablet, and Ive had alot of different ones...once I got a phablet the smaller tablets felt kinda redundant and got less use because my phone is ALWAYS with me . I have no idea if they will totally drop it but there really isnt much talk about it, i think it makes more sense to get the 2017 ipad instead due to price....you get used to the bigger size which really isnt that big compared to say a 2 in 1 pc with a 13-14" touch screen which I also have and love. If the 9.7 pro goes on sale this week I might grab one

I don't disagree with this, but read my post again. I'm talking about being able to appreciate the form factor, not trying to argue that cannibalisation is happening.

My point is that if you can't appreciate the form factor, you can't understand why some people don't care about the relative pricing. Repeatedly bringing it up is ignoring the market for it. Not everyone buys the iPad mini expecting "mini" pricing.

In particular, this claim is a perfect example of what I'm saying. Not everyone buys the iPad mini because of pricing. They buy it because it's exactly what they want. The iPhone plus for this market is simply inadequate. So is the Kindle, or any android tablet for that matter. There is simply no tablet in the iPad mini's form factor now that rivals it.

But enough people would go for the larger iPad if it is the better bang for their buck than a new Mini regardless.

Apple cannot do the Mini considering that factor and ipso facto, cannibalization. We have all witnessed what happened before when the Mini was released back when, of course its size matters but so did better bang for one's buck. The larger IPad got outsold by more than a 2 to 1 ratio.

The problem is that you don't recognize the mini form factor as the "bang" for many people. The price does not matter, the larger iPad cannot give me the "bang" that the iPad mini does. That is my point.
[doublepost=1496594687][/doublepost]To clarify, I'm not arguing that the market for the iPad mini is shrinking, but it's not a relevant point to those interested in an updated mini. We want it regardless.

It's hard to actually predict the size of the market for a mini at this point though. It's been neglected for so long that the figures are distorted right now.

I know for sure that even if it were priced $200 more than the 2017 iPad, I would buy it regardless. Conversely I see no point in getting the 2017 iPad when I can get the iPad Pro, unless I was considering a use case requiring multiple iPads.

For some iPhone plus users (not all) an iPad mini may overlap use cases too much. But keep in mind Apple makes smaller 4.7" and 4" iPhones as well. For those users, an iPad mini fills a much bigger void.

Personally I find the mini and 12.9 pro the most useful iPad sizes. The mini for casual consumption and the 12.9 for productivity/immersion. I find the 9.7" (or midsize iPad) too much of a compromise--too big/heavy to hold one handed and use casually for long periods of time; also too small to work for long periods of time or get immersed in content.

But I understand everyone has different needs and preferences when it comes to trade offs. Some see the mid-size iPad as the happy balance between portability and screen real estate. It's good that Apple offers choices. Right now it's 3 size choices for both iPhones and iPads. For something as personal as these devices and for the vast market they appeal to, I think 3 is a good standard number of choices--small, medium, and large. I hope Apple sees this and continues to offer strong products in each size.

I love my new Mini 4! Very fast and purchase two of them because I like the size and the “new” slim design too! Yes, it a 2015 release date but either that or nothing! Now I hoping Apple does not real a new Mini for quite a while yet; another 4 years from now?

Y’all, this thread is from 2017.

Yeah, but there have been grumblings from those in-the-know of an update to the mini either this year (fat chance now) or early 2019. That's why people are getting excited.

An updated mini would get my money for sure.
