Hey all,

So tomorrow morning my mission is to phone Apple to get my *second* replacement MacBook sent over to me.

I started my order over a month ago now. My first took 2.5 weeks to arrive and when it did it had 2 glaring dead pixels in the centre of the screen. So off for a replacement. That took 2 weeks to arrive at which point I was like, "great! no dead pixels! no mooing! YES!".

So I use it for a while but find it's starting to bend when it's been on for a bit! After it's cooled down it goes back to normal shape, but during a few hours use it is so badly deformed it's a pain to work on and I feel like throwing it out of the window.

I'm so annoyed at Apple at the moment because I had waited to buy a MacBook when I had some spare cash but now I have parted with that cash but havn't actually got a laptop I want to work on yet. Everytime I look at it I just can't be bothered to play with it now... I'm extremely tempted to ask for my money back...

I'd be very happy if they said my replacement MacBook had been upgraded to a black one or maybe get the new version of OS X which will probably come out at WWDC. But is that actually likely to happen? I didn't think so... I might try it on though - can't hurt to try! They've had my cash acruing interest in their bank now and these to MacBooks i've sent back will be in their refurb store I'm sure earning them even more cash.

Seriously Apple, get it sorted.

Bending...? I think that is a bit farfetched.

Why would they upgrade you to a Black one? And no the version of OS X will not be coming out at WWDC.

You sound like someone trying to get something for nothing. If you aren't happy with it, send it back and buy something else. Don't try to scam Apple to get free upgrades.

Bending?!?

I'm sorry, but this is one of those things where I have to see it to believe it...otherwise it just sounds like another tenuous complaint.

I would like to see pictures of the bending.
I find this hard to believe, as most materials have a small coefficient of thermal expansion.
Not that I don't believe you or anything ... Apple's QC has gone down the crapper lately.

when he says bending, he probably means the notebook doesnt sit on a flat surface perfectly. i doubt he means that it actually curls up into a U-shape

I dont like this sort of attitude...

We're the consumer and Apple is the manufacturer. If we arent happy with the quality of the products in any sort of way whats wrong with asking for some compensation. Its not a "scam" to ask for a free upgrade when you've had to spend 1.5 months buying a product that should have taken a week to buy and get delivered if they had a decent delivery system and a good quality product. Any decent company, out of good will, will offer something. Ok - maybe not something like a £300 better laptop or a version of an OS months prior to it being released but something! Free AppleCare (would cost them nothing) or even a free ipod?

Compensation for what exactly? If you don't like take it back and get your money back, or get a replacement. That would be compensation. Some places won't even do that for you.

Even his first one, 2 dead pixels. Isn't Apple's policy like 5 or something? I know it is more than two. So right there Apple was nice to give him a replacement, is that not a nice deal?

This sounds like bull to me. Making stuff like this up is very deceiptful. I am all for consumer rights, but you don't need to lie.

That is what makes him sound like he is trying to get something for nothing. Just because you don't feel like you have gotten something that "you want" to work on yet, doesn't mean Apple didn't deliver. Your first one was fine, and well within Apple's pixel policy, yet you sent it back and they replaced it. Clearly going disregarding their policy to make you a happy customer.

This is the kind of attitude I don't like.

Within the UK if you arent happy with the product you can send it back within 14 days.
I'm getting a macbook soon and im only happy to do so because I know if i have dead pixel(s) its going straight back.

Plus I dont believe anyone would want to go through the hassel of sending something back (which takes 2 weeks at a time) for nothing but getting something free. If he says his laptop is bending (which probably does mean its wobbling on the table after heating up) then its bending..ok?

What is ANYONE going to do with a laptop thats too hot to use on your lap and wobbly when on a table? iCurve anyone? why bother.

He obviously doesnt just want his money back else he can just ask and get it back, he obviously wants a macbook else he wouldnt bother with all this exchange business and he obviously isnt going to tell everyone on this forum a lie about his laptop bending just for jokes - if he did want to lie then he could and would just do it to only Apple? no?

so let's say the guy is indeed a liar, what are you, a member of the board at Apple? relaaaaaax man :D Apple can deal with those kind of customers (not saying the original poster is a liar) I think this site should be for Mac users to help each other with as limited hostility as possible.

The original poster makes interesting claims about the bending part, so would you be able to show us exactly what you mean by taking pictures?

I believe the guy. I still want to see pictures. Sounds kind of cool.

Weren't some batteries puffing up? Could that be related to this?

Seriously though guys, you need to calm down. Apple makes a helluva good computer but they're far from perfect.

This I would like to see.

Hard to believe.

I don't doubt that they are far from perfect. However, he had a good one to begin with. 2 dead pixels is hardly something to get mad about. And as a I said, I think Apple was hella nice to fix it for him.

However, chances are they would have just replaced his screen in the original Macbook... so wouldn't the "bending" have been evident in the beginning?

I mean they could have sent a new one as well. Just thought of that though.

I would have returned it, as that would have been quicker.

I think that coming up with a plan to purposefully trying to get Apple to give him something for free is mean. That's just me though. If he wants to stress how inconvienence he has been, maybe Apple will hook him up.

I absolutely disagree! I HATE dead pixels! And if I'm going to shell out a thousand bucks for a computer then it better be absolutely perfect. If it's not then I'm getting a replacement.

This too would piss me off to no end. Of course I'm horribly impatient when it comes to large purchases online. I drove nearly 16 hours round-trip to my nearest Apple Store for my PowerMac because I couldn't fathom spending that kind of cash and then waiting for shipping. If I'm spending that much money I want to walk out of the store with it in my hands. :D

In regards to the 'bending" problem, I'd like to see pictures of this because it's sounds pretty weird. But if after a few hours of operation and it no longer sits flush on a flat surface then that too would annoy me to no end!

Bottom line: I like my Macs to be perfect. ;)

Regardless of how much you disagree, Apple still has a policy as do all manufactuers, when it comes to pixels. Apple in his case was nice and replaced it even though they didn't have to, because it was only 2.

Precisely...wow, that makes #2!!!

I didn't say a word about Apple's policy, I just said he has reason to be mad. ;)

Well, everyone does. But how far should we require a manufacturer, be it Apple or anyone else, must go in order to provide your perceived perfection? Two dead pixels in the center of the screen would be annoying, and it sounds like the latest MacBook has some sort of bizarre heat problem causing the case to flex.

Apple has a responsibility to provide their customers with properly working systems out of the box. But it seems a bit unreasonable to expect them to perfection in every box.

And if they did give it to us what would all those tech support people do for a living?:D

Woah guys...

Yes it DOES bend - not so much that you can see it, but enough that it wobbles. It's very hard to give photos but an example is that a piece of paper folded over twice will pas right under one of the feet without touching it. If you hold the bottom left of the screen and lift upwards, the MacBook wobbles onto the front right foot.

Guys, I'm not trying to get something for nothing and can people PLEASE stop saying that Apple are "good" for replacing my 2 dead pixels. UK consumer law says they have to accept it back within 14 days, just go do your homework before you post!

My complain with Apple is that I've had to send 2 back and they've made the whole process crappy by making it take 2 weeks for each MacBook to arrive - that is just ridiculous these days.

If you re-read my first post you'll find a hint of sarcasm in my "upgrade to a black one"... Go figure for yourselves...

Anyone care to post something which isn't blatant flaming?

Dead pixels in the centre of the screen should not be passable by any companies QC. I have a feeling that Apple only give the LCD panels a cursory inspection and leave the QC of the panel to the panel's manufacturer.
Which is wrong, considering how much we pay for Apple's products.

And please, no-one give me the old "do you expect them to inspect every single unit". Yes I do.
I worked in a factory producing CRTs for monitors and TVs. We inspected up to 400 panels an hour for defects at 3 different stages (with 2 - 3 people on each stage) before it was joined to the rear funnel.

EDIT. Oh and my G4 PB warps slightly when it's hot. It's enough to fit a 2p piece under the rubber foot to stop it wobbling.

Cool, so it's not just me with the wobbling then...

I'm still going to get a replacement sent out because it's been getting worse mine has and I don't want to end up with something I'll regret in a weeks time.

I agree about the inspection for dead pixels - people keep saying about this 5 limit - that's ridiculous. Dead pixels = broken display. Why would you put up with something like that! It renders it useless for people who do image or video work...

On a 21" monitor the CRT tubes were allowed 2 "dot offs".
None were allowed in the centre 80mm.
1 was allowed outside of that 80mm
2 were allowed if they were both within 10mm of the edge of the screen but they had to be more than 40mm apart from each other.

My PB has 2 dead pixels about 5mm in from the edge on the right hand side and they're only about 10mm apart. I can live with them as they're right on the edge.

I do think Apple needs to sort it's QC out, or demand better grade LCD panels.

Exactly. My dead pixels were within the 80mm and right next to each other. Perfectly reasonable for a replacement I thought.

In a perfect world, dead pixels wouldn't exist. However, if only displays without dead/stuck pixels were sold, the price of all displays would probably be a lot higher (my guess).

I might try it on though -

I think that was the phrase that to some people suggested it seemed that he was complaining in order to get something for nothing.

Yes, it should be right. No, I don't think you'll get a couple of hundred quid of freebies - particularly for the 'bending' issue since I don't think it's a recognised MB issue.

Apple's hardly doing it on purpose - and sure they'll get some cash back in the refurb store but it costs them more to sell a refurb than a new Mac.
