I promise you that there is absolutely no cosmetic differences with refurbished models. I’ve purchased them several times over the years, absolutely no issue. And if there is an issue, it has the exact same return, warranty, and AppleCare policies as brand new.
There is a thread going right now [tiny ding] that is the kind of cosmetic damage that I have seen in some of my refurbs.

Yeah, but I can just as easily find you a bunch of threads of people getting that with brand new products. It makes no difference.
In fact, I would even say the refurbished are likely to be higher quality, simply by the fact that they have been inspected and cleaned more than once.
In fact, that thread you linked is not for a refurbished model, but a brand new one.
And given that the return and warranty policy is absolutely no different, there’s really no downsides. You don’t like it? Send it back.

My point is that if the OP returns that laptop it would likely show up as a refurb. Personally I prefer refurbs if I can find the right configuration. Usually they have no cosmetic dings, but sometimes they do; I do not care. And like I said earlier, they have had additional inspection by a live human.

Much better than a dead human. Much.

Get an Apple Refurb. about 600-700 bucks less. Apple goes over them with a fine tooth comb; I have never been unsatisfied, and you won’t be able to tell the difference. Same exact warranty as a new one. But Go to the Apple site, so you know that it was refurbed by Apple.

a small consideration, i reside near the border of a sales tax free state. i can pop over and buy a laptop there without tax.

BTW, a word of advice on shopping the refurb store is that you should know what you want and be ready to buy if your model pops up. Popular builds can fly off the shelves pretty fast so you won't want to sleep on your decision.

I literally had that experience once. I had a specific build in mind that was always out of stock. Right before going to bed, I saw it show up. I decided to get it when I got up in the morning. It was gone by the time I woke up.

The next time I saw it, was when I got up in the middle of the night a few weeks later. I didn't delay this time. I pulled the trigger at 3am and went back to bed.
