Tricky. For indoor photo's of our kids I prefer 85 mm. (=135). Gives the
right amount a distance between them and the camera.
For landscapes I prefer something much wider.

So for the next 3 months I'd take the 85mm (=135 equiv)

I've got young kids too, so I'll agree 85mm.

In my imagination
Photojournalism, 12-24 f4 or 14-24 f2.8 or soon to be Tokina 11-18 f2.8

I mean, right there, in your face with a fast low light lens at ISO 1600 and since i know how to use the camera correctly I get very little noise and come out with some pretty sharp images.

I find that the focal length I use the least, or could just do without is the middle. 12-24 is the sweet spot, then anything more than that and I might as well move closer, or pull out the 70-200.

landscapes and family photos huh? crazy....
I love 70-200 but my prime would be 80-85... best for portraits.
I think you'd get much different numbers on other sites.

An interesting post would compare favorite lenses for different types of photography.

I've got young kids too, so I'll agree 85mm.

But this may change for me. (no I am not selling the kids).
The weather is getting better over here, so we'll be spending more time outdoor. And I just bought a 200mm, so I guess it will
be my favourite toy (read: lens of choice) for 3 months. If I manage to get a focus lock on them running around...

I spend most of my time close to 600mm in 35mm film terms... thank heaven for digital!:p If only one fl / lens were available to me for an entire lifetime (three months), it would be the Olympus Zuiko Digital 300mm f/2.8 with a 2x for digital sensor factor.;)

What is your favorite focal length? (Adjust for 35mm equivalent.) [Edit, copied from clarification post #10] "If you could only shoot with only one prime lens at the focal length of your choosing (22mm, 96mm, 350mm, etc.) for 3 months - what would it be?"

This might be a focal length that shows the kind of photos you like to take. Bigger ranges might be instinctual, but I was more curious as to the exact lengths that people prefer. 135mm is my new favorite - its the closest thing to what my eye sees as art/beauty in photography.

[Further clarification] The poll choices indicate narrow values of ranges, not zoom lengths. It is a discrete breakdown of a broader poll which might be:
1. super-wide
2. wide
3. normal
4. telephoto
5. super-telephoto

I understand the problem you had with the poll options but I still have to hold my hand up and comment on the fact that you should have just posted a few focal lengths and let others chip in with the more exotic choices.

In answer to your poll however, I like my 50mm (hoping to buy a 22-44mm zoom soon though). I will have to say that anything past 85mm is irrelevant to me as I have no need for such focal lengths.
